Water and Stone

In the spring of 2009, a young playwright/theater director arrived in Warwick. He was in search of a community that would share their stories. A year and a half later, Will MacAdams has woven many hours of interviews into Water and Stone, a collection of stories and recollections about the Town of Warwick. It will be performed as part of the Warwick Summer Arts Festivals performance on Sunday at 6:00 P.M., July 18th at 6:00 P.M. atop the Pennings Orchard. Water and Stone celebrates the rich soil of the Warwick Valley and the many people whose stories have defined it. MacAdams interviewed local farmers, farm workers, and other residents about their relationship to the land and to the seasons. Stories shared included farmers describing last season’s tomato blight, Florida residents recalling the onion harvest festival, farm workers describing the richness of the black dirt, and others describing development and change in Warwick across generations.

These stories form the heart of Water and Stone, weaving together poetry, music, and dance. It will be performed by actors, musicians, and dancers from Isis Movement, a modern dance company led by Warwick native Melissa Padham, which thrilled audiences at Sheuermann Farms during last year’s Festival. As audiences watch the sunset across the valley, they will hear and see the stories of their neighbors, their family members, and residents who have come before them. The event is a rare opportunity to remember Warwick’s past, reflect on its future, and celebrate the power of stories to build common ground.

MacAdams is a community-based theater maker who creates original plays inspired by local stories. He has worked in theater in South Africa, Indonesia, and throughout the United States bringing together actors, activists, elders, young people and artists. Past work includes: Peter Handke’s Kaspar, performed by graduate level theater students in Johannesburg ; Eye to Eye, create by young people and future police officers from New Haven, CT; and Awaken New Haven, a five-hour, four neighborhood theatrical event that brought audiences to diverse locations across the city of New Haven.
The Warwick Summer Arts Festival is a project of Community 2000 and works in partnership with the Town of Warwick, the Village of Warwick, Pennings Farm and Orchard and Scheuermann Farm and Greenhouses. Festival 2010 is supported with funds from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency with additional funding from Shop Rite of Warwick, the Town of Warwick, The Village of Warwick and Orange and Rockland Utilities,

A suggested donation of $10.00 a person or $20.00 a family help to support the arts and culture of Warwick. For more information, visit our web site at www.warwickarts.org or call our information line at 845/469-0963.
