I've Always used a Brantz3 which has had many features including average speed, but to be honest i rarely use it, I much prefer using Trip distance & Total Distance and for the timings make sure you write your eta on each checkpoint in the roadbook, then just do the maths in your head ie, 60 miles , 60 mins, 60mph but that means you need to Go like F**.

I do highly recommend a remote for the brantz especially if you are in a car with 4 point or more! belts as your not going to be able to reach the dash, hell i couldn't even reach the door to shut it!

Afraid i can't answer the speed sensor question, I haven't fitted one to a car before.
