In reply to your suggestion that the Guild might consider a route through Tunisia to Egypt - we do actually have at least half of that route recced! Guild members might remember the ill-fated launch of Liege-Bengazi - Liege after the Welsh Trial in 2000.

Unfortunately, during the recce it became clear that no unleaded fuel was available (not a problem for classic cars), we made it to Tripoli with the fuel we had in jerry cans. The final nail in the event was the amount of at least £20,000 that the Libyan authorities wanted to allow us to run a motoring event through their country - I think they thought we were on the same scale as the Paris-Dakar! We re-consider the route every year but the high cost of the ferry to Tunisia is usually the deciding factor and we put it to bed again.

Coincidentally, on the flight home from our last Moroccan event in 2004, Peter had a long conversation with Philip Young (friend and fellow rally organiser) about Libya and our experiences. He was amazed that anyone had thought about such a route, but it obviously sowed a few seeds!

You will have a brilliant time, the roads were excellent and the people very friendly and we look forward to hearing about your experiences on your return. Better brush up on your arabic, from what I remember none of the traffic signs were even vaguely decipherable!
