Mike, you mean the amazing light blue shark westfield? the one beached on the side of the road, and you were trying to bring her back to life. The shark westfield, which when you turned the engine over sparks were coming from inside the alternator, which was just underneath the dripping petrol from the carb. I rememeber. If you could have repaired it, or got hold of another alternator could you have continued?

I've had my share of alternator problems on long distance rallies/races. And the bits that fail don't take up much room in the spares bag. You can't beat the adrenalin rush of franticly removing an alternator from under a glowing four branch, and dismantling it in the dark, and having a navigator shrieking at you to hurry up.
