Subject: pontywaun name

can anyone clarify what the word pontywaun means ,it used to be spelt with an i in it and not a u ,therefore pont in welsh meaning bridge,and wain meaning wagon or cart,so was it wagon bridge or cart bridge please let me know,and while we are at it,what was the very first shop to open in pontywaun,and whos was it byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Pontywain seems to be an anglicized form of Pontywaun. The anglicization of place names is quite common eg Wain Vawr instead of Waun Fawr
Early O.S Maps show the village as Pontywaun.
Probably originates from the Welsh Pont (Bridge) and Gwaun(Meadow)
Its unlikely we'll discover who opened the first shop but the first Public House in Pontywaun is The Castle.
