Subject: MINERS INSTITUTE

What happened to the Crosskeys Miners Institute in Gladstone Street. My Grandfather was the caretaker there and his family used to take such pride in helping him to maintain the upkeep, Job Jefferies was his name. What happened to all the furniture and in particular a Brass Plaque that used to hang just inside the door that my mother remembers was her job to polish. Did the funds of the sale go back into the Lodge funds that was used to build it?
Need a lot of info on this.. Thanks Kim

Thats a very interesting point you have brought up, I am an ex miner and was always lead to believe that the institute was a "listed building" ?????? if it was , who gave permission for the demolision ???? or was permission given ????.
I look forward for more replies on this subject and I thank you for raiseing it.

Joe, The reason why I have started on this quest is because I heard on the weekend that the dressed stone that the 'stute was made from was transported to Japan? I need more info as I believe there has been a cover up of sorts. Please help me...

It may initially be worth checking if the Institute was a Listed Building. Cadw is reponsibile for all Listed Buildings in Wales.

My gran ( margaret thomas ) was the cleaner of the club just after the war and I can remember going to help her and throwing sand onto the floor around the snooker tables.
I remember that the caretaker lived in Newtown and I seem to remember him as a large gentleman. My uncle Stan Donavon was the MC for dancing in later years and I think that my father Ossie Rich was steward for a short time.

good stuff about the institute,i boxed for newbridge in 1980 and we staged a night of boxing there i can remember,it being full up downstairs in the big hall, full of old characters pity its all gone, and yes if it was a listed building;it should never have been pulled down, funny how money as the last say in everything.try to find out more and shame those who was involved,in this all is left are photos and memory,s what a pity keep up the good work byeeee

Keith Colbrooke and his solicitor wife Dawn Bala bought the stute with the money she embezelled from her clients in Newport and the surrounding area. Dawn Bala had an office by the hand post and most of her cleints were elderly people in sheltered accomodation who trusted her with their life savings and the proceeds of the sale of thier homes. My father being one of them. She was arrested on their return from holiday in portugal and was sent to prison for 2 years. There was most definately a cover up of sorts concerning the sale of the stute as it was definately a listed building.

Last I heard, Dawn was living in Garden Suburbs, Pontywaun. Keith's brother runs a garage in Wattsville so perhaps he could help you.
