Tracing is not the biggest problem. So what if they get your address, what are they going to do unless they are an axe murderer or pervert?

The problems arise when they get your IP, then they port scan you and gain access to your PC (always run a firewall!!). From this they can map your drive and get total access to EVERYTHING on it, from your love letters to your MP3's, even your system files. Once they delete command.com and a few other essential windows items, it's game over and your PC is about as useful as a broken toaster! I know it happens and have SEEN it happen. If a malicious attacker is serious and in the know, given easy acces he will be in and out of your PC within 2-3 minutes, and you'll know fuck about it until Windows goes tits up, or you get your next Credit Card/Phone bill.

Port scanners/sniffers are widely available on the net, and can scan a "range" of ports & IP's till it finds an easy or "open" target. Once their in, you're fucked!

With a decent proxy and a firewall, you make it very hard for malicious assholes to get you. They won't bother trying someone who's really well protected, it's too much hassle and you have nothing to quickly offer them. They can get in if they really want to, but more often than not they'll give up and go find some poor bastard who's not protected and give them hell.

There are plenty of free firewalls available, try:

www.zonelabs.com (look for the FREE edition of Zonealarm)

Windows XP has its own but when coupled with SP2, it's shite in comparison to Zonealarm.

Then, for some added fun, find yourself a decent IP tracer, like NTX (which I think is now out of commission, shame because it was fucking excellent at finding malicious pricks!), or WHOISVIEW, which I believe is free also! Bonus!

www.whoisview.com/products/whoisview/

Zonealarm will display the IP's trying to gain access to your PC, then through WHOISView, you can trace the IP back to it's host source or domain name (aol etc, or business names) and report the little twat to his Internet Service Provider with the info given. They in turn will either cancel his internet connection, or hand him over to the appropriate authorities who take a very dim view on "malicious intent".

I think it goes without saying, but get yourself a good antivirus AND anti-spyware program/s also. I am sure you lads have this already, but just in case you fancy a change:

Norton is popular, but AVG does a FREE antivirus program and it is regularly updated (for free!) just in case you want a change or your Antivirus is giving you hassle.

free.grisoft.com/

Lavasoft's ADAWARE is brilliant for giving spyware, malware etc, the kick in the bollocks they deserve! And guess what? Its Free also, and you get free updates!

www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Hope this is of help to you, I'll shut up now, I'm starting to sound like a software rep! = )
