Not in these days of M & A Kathleen...
Like any other business, they're subject to the same corporate strangulations that has resulted in the death of many industries. No longer is individual dedication sufficient to sustain a newspaper through tough times, now the bean-counters occupy Caesar's throne with thumbs at the ready.

Local newspapers depend on local advertising revenue from small businesses in their coverage area. Many band together under one corporate ownership, but when that happens often they lose that unique sense of "Identity" with their home community. I know nothing about the demise of the Eastchester Record, but mourn it.

My Dad was one who was always writing a Letter to the Editor about some issue or other. He also wrote whimsical poetry which was printed under the nom-de-plume of Suomy Nona. Spelling backwards of course divulges its meaning.

The small town local newspaper provides a unique outlet that is rapidly fading from the American landscape. Now it is being replaced by electronic media, and the writers of those Letters from days gone by are today's bloggers.
