  • On a related, but slightly OT note, there is a really funny Scarecrow and Mrs King fanfic that pokes fun at fanfic extremes. You don't really have to be familiar with SMK to figure out exactly what the jokes are. Many of them are done in JAG fanfic. I highly recommend it for a good laugh. • Unplanned pregnancies as a way to get the characters together, or to throw a wrench in the works. I can take an occasional story like this, but it seems to be a favorite theme. Throughout 10 years of JAG, we never saw even one of the primary (or secondary) characters experience an unplanned pregnancy. In fact, Harriet's pregnancies were the only ones ever shown.     • I forgot about Singer, you're right hers wasn't planned. And by planned, I mean a married or committed couple having children together. I know TPTB did the teenage pregnancy in Harriet's past, but the pregnancies since married, I would say are "planned," as in "wanted." Who knows with Catherine Gale, it was just sort of thrown in. And as we discussed on the HB, who knows who the father was? Maybe she did want a baby, she did say congratulations were in order. As for my pet peeve of unplanned pregnancies, I was speaking of Harm & Mac, whether H&M, Harm/other or Mac/other. I just don't understand the need to use that ploy repeatedly. It has to be set up right, with a believable reason that birth control was forgotten or failed, and appropriate reactions from the people involved. But it happens to the best of us, and I can't see why it couldn't happen to Harm and Mac. I also dislike when Harm is made out to be extremely inarticuate when interacting with Mac on a personal level.     • It would depend on the situation, but Harm clearly matured over the course of the series. When the series started, in 1995, he'd already been on active duty for 10 years - he was a month shy of his 32nd birthday -he wasn't a young man just starting his first "adult" job. Harm wouldn't disrespect Mac so much that he'd want to strip her of her name, Mac wouldn't toss away her name simply because she's the girl. They want each other as they are or not at all. The story I wrote where she resigned upon return from Paraguay was strictly due to AJ's treatment of Harm. • The only really huge peeve I have is people who absolutely refuse to use decent grammar and spelling. Your software can correct this stuff for you if you are having a problem. And there's a perfectly good free office suite available for anyone who can't afford Microsofts version. Foreign language readers and writers get a pass due to the ridiculous difficulty of the English language, however there are still plenty of people around who consistently offer help proofreading that it no excuse for anyone else. A lot of times it's not the confusion of the author as much as typing fast and not realizing that a letter is missed.         • I agree, when the "juices" are flowing & I'm writing quickly, there are mistakes I tend to make. There are letters I frequently transpose, & words I interchange. The misspellings are usually caught by the spell check, but interchanged words are not always caught.         • Oh, I make mistakes with them,too. Most recently, it was lightening/lightning. And when I re-read, my eye skips right over the error. • The use of "Mac" and "Sarah" in the same sentence as soon as an intimate conversation arises used to be funny, but now bordering on overkill. And the "explanations" the writers use are comical. "Sarah", the infinitely more intimate name Harm only uses when he means business is gag worthy. ;) "He said my name, he must love me!" Mac will always be Mac; they tainted "Sarah" when they paired her with Webb. "Is she Mac in the office and Sarah in bed, or..." makes me laugh out loud at least.   • I think possibly a lot of writers may have thought that Sarah was a special name Harm would reserve for privacy BEFORE Webbs slimey mouth uttered it so often. After the Paraguay arc a lot of people took a different view but a lot of fan fiction had already been outlined started or completely written. I know I look at it differently now. Its hard to hear Sarah without hearing Webb say it. Now I decide specifically on a case by case basis. Same with the rare endearment. Mostly never but sometimes it just feels right to me at least.   • The use of the name Sarah doesn't bother me at all. I don't see Harm using it all the time, but he did use it on special occasions when wanted to make a deeper emotional connection with Mac. And while "we" the viewer didn't like Webb using the name, most of the time Harm wasn't around to hear Webb's whiney voice. In fact, except for Paraguay or the hospital when Webb was trying goad Harm, Harm wouldn't have heard conversations between Mac & Webb at all. I hardly think the use of a name is cause to "rip" a piece of fiction. And personally, I don't think Harm would ban the "Sarah" from his vocabulary, but I also don't think he would use it as common place. (NT) -- doc, 14:01:41 04/28/08 Mon

  • It's interesting to go back and read what others thought might happen based on previews and spoilers. How the story arcs could have gone in many different tangents than the one it took.     • I agree -- it's like a blast from the past to read old speculation fic and remember the kinds of discussions that were happening on the boards at those times. It seems like over the years, writers have managed to fill in all of the major blanks, but there are still a few episodes that stand out to me that haven't really been written much about. Like "Valor" from this week's episodes; I've always loved the contrast between Harm and Mac's serious business and Renee, Harriet, Mic, and Bud acting so frivolously, but I'm not sure I've ever seen that taken advantage of in a story.   • I liked the episode 'Mutiny' but it wasnt one of my favorite episodes. It was fun to see an AU episode, with all the actors in other roles...the scenes in the 'real world' were great, between Harm and Mac..the tension between them was so thick you could have cut it with a knife.
