• Definitely interested! I've read thousands of JAG fanfiction stories over the years, some instantly forgettable, some so memorable I know the title, author and website in an instant, even years later! Sytematically remembering and re-reading or reading ones I'd missed thru the seasons would be ten + weeks of great fun.   • Not Pixie, but I think it might be hard to sort fanfic by a season, because there are plenty of stories that aren't set in a specific time frame. If no time frame is given, by the author, and no specific events from canon are mentioned, then it's anyone's guess as to when it takes place. I'm game for discussing fanfic, I just wanted to point out that some stories are vague about the time frame, or give a range across several seasons for when they could take place.     • I figured they would fall into an "other" or "unknown/unknowable" category. There're the ten seasons, plus any that take place after FW&FS (what I call the "out-years," some call them "post-finale" ) plus the "unknowables." Often there's a clue - I read one recently where I fgured the timeframe from the only clue - a mention of approx how old AJ Roberts was. So, at least 12 weeks of fun! I don't know if lska was suggesting discussions or just posting titles/authors/websites where they are.         • Either/both? I don't think it really matters where exactly a story gets posted, as long as it gets posted somewhere. I think total accuracy is less important here than just getting some discussion started. Looking back at what I have on my computer (*ahem* an embarrassing amount), I'm starting to think it might work to do S1/S2, S3/S4, S5/S6, S7/S8, S9/S10, and then post-series/total head-scratchers. Those season pairs seem to mark different eras in the H/M relationship, at least in my head. And at least for the early seasons, I know there isn't that much out there, so doubling up makes sense. • I don't know if I've ever felt that a story is 'just right'. For me it's usually a case where I just want to be done with it and move on. No matter how many times I re-read a story before posting it, I'll always find something to edit. I don't mean fix typos. It's more a case where I thought re-wording something might make things clearer. I've never posted with no editing. Sometimes, even after editing something to death, I would finally post it, and no sooner had I done so, than I thought of something to change or add. • Actually, by the time I post a story, I’m usually done with it. I’m the sort that works on each paragraph until I’m happy with it. Sometime a story will just flow, & I’ll finish it in a few hours. Other times, it’s hard work…I might work on the same paragraph for 2 for 3 hours, or 3 days. I work to get the wording & imagery just right to describe a scene. • I am a pantser, that is, I write by the seat of my pants. I don't really know where I'm going, and make it up as I go along. The characters lead me, not with the overall theme, but with how I get them there. I do my own editing and proofing. I tend to try to get it right as I type, and can't let an error go. But I'm trying to change. I'm trying to get it all written, then go back and fill in. I don't agonize over each paragraph, but I will often write and just discard the whole thing. If it's not just about there first off, it is never going to make it. I always read my stories out loud. That way, I catch the clunkers. • I have only written a little for JAG, but done more writing in other places. I always have to edit. And I try not to be afraid of making both little and big changes. But I think you have to be careful not to overwork it and take away all of the rough edges that make your story unique. One thing that works for me is to just start typing a whole section of story over again and changing things as I go. • I only have been writing for 15 months, but in this period I've never interrupt the process. It's a hard work, but there isn't anything else that gives me as much satisfaction. After a chapter, I wait some time, then I start re-reading, again and again. • I've been following the progress of OTW with interest. (Just a teeny correction: I think it actually initially sprung from the FanLib debacle and not only from the journal deletions that happened for another reason.) I have some reservations about the way things have progressed; I know some groups feel excluded and that OTW is overstepping when it claims to represent all of fandom.   • I'm one of the derelicts - still haven't finished beta-reading the long story I was assigned when I volunteered months ago! Perhaps 2008 can be the rejuvenation of the site - I know I love the site and volunteered in good faith but got bogged down in a story I don't care for personally (I WILL get it done). • Can it be a favorite line from a fanfiction story instead of from a show or movie? There are some very memorable lines in some great stories! "Submitters' wishes" was our theme last yr, so it might be nice to do something different. My fortune cookie idea - get a fortune cookie with your next Chinese food lunch or dinner, submit the "fortune" - most are so general great stories can be written!       • I had to laugh yesterday when I played around with my Mac and looked at all the widgets you can download. One of them was a fortune cookie generator, giving you a fortune every day. • I hate to make work for you Pixie, but I like the idea of submitting prompts, and having three to chose from. Maybe it would be more manageable if you did it the way you did the first ficathon. i.e. Only the participants send in three prompts, and you mix them up and give the writers three randomly picked prompts. There were just too many ideas for my tiny brain, last time, and I some of them, although good, were too long and too detailed.   • This is actually very similar to the way I did the very first ficathon. You'll still end up with 3 prompts to choose from.     • If two people pick the same numbers, the second person would simply have to submit a new number. That's the same thing I do (or at least try to do), if two people pick the same prompt in one of the other formats we've done.       • I like the number method. I have kind of an odd idea for the prompts. Instead of just coming up with a word or two off the top of our heads, or song lyrics, or something like that. Why don't we post our favorite lines from our favorite movies or TV shows. Nothing that would be too terribly familiar or too involved, but just one or two lines from our favorite scenes. Much like we do with the HBX challenge except it's writing Harm and Mac with lines from different shows. Haven't you ever heard a line on a show and thought "I wish Harm had said that to Mac..."?   • I would prefer anybody being able to submit prompts, rather than just the participants - I have really enjoyed writing for the last two, but never actually submitted a prompt because I couldn't come up with anything good. Asking me to submit three prompts myself would probably lead to me not participating. I actually loved the wide and varied selection of prompts in the last ficathon; took me a while to pick one, but it was incredible to have so much choice! :-) I'd enjoy picking my prompts again, but I'm also fine with the set-up you laid out, Pixie.     • Colie, I understand what you mean. Afterall, if I had ideas in the first place, I wouldn't need prompts. However, in the first ficathon, prompts could be limited to a few, or even one, word. In fact, I submitted a one-word prompt, "Betrayal", which resulted in a great story. Another prompt was a line from a poem (or I could have used a line from a song.)
