First of all, may I wish each and every person reading this the very best of Merry Christmases.

This time is truly a wonderful time of the year, one of magic, one of mysticism, one of family reunions, one of old times remembered. And the spirit is once again renewed for those who follow the teachings of the Bible, and for those who simply enjoy the day and events for what they are - a celebration.

While the 'season' itself is primarily - at least for me, anyway - an occasion mostly for children, who as we all know are full of wonder and merriment and curiosity. Of course, some of us never grow up, some of us can retain the innocence of the season purely and cleanly.

The children (I'm referring to those of one to maybe 10 years of age) of today's time have no clues to the Christmases past for most of us. Times were so much simpler then. Trips to Granny's house for all the good food, for meeting people whom we had no idea who they were/are, making new friends and acquaintances. Of course, the children of today will someday be in our positions, remembering the same things we remember today. And they will wonder, as do we, where the time went.

Much has changed in my lifetime, even more has changed since 9/11/01 for all of us. The threats to our way of life, to the simple comings and goings of everyday life was changed on that fateful day. The mere notion of making a trip to Granny's house has now turned into an evolution of thoughts on safety, on integrity, on what the other people may wish to have. This is especially so when flying. As for me, I've not flown anywhere since way before 9/11/01, although I may be flying for a week or ten days the first part of January. But that's neither here nor there for this communique.

I remember the calls to Granny well, for they were a chore if nothing else. My Mother's parents were on a party line, and it was difficult at best to even get hold of them in an off-season period. But it was exciting to go to Round Pond, Arkansas, to play with my friends there, black and white alike. We could run through Mrs. Mack's garden (huge), or through Mr. Mack's barn. There was food galore from turkeys from Mrs. Mack's flock, handily rung the day before, yams, green beans, strawberries, deserts, coffee (sumptuous) and tea by the gallons. Either before the big meal or after, the old cotton gin was just across the gravel road from their house, and Jack and I would play over there on top of the cotton bales if there were any left from the harvesting season. I went back through Round Pond some 11 years ago, and while the old homestead was still there, the community had withered away for the most part. That's why God gave us the ability to remember, I suppose.

Just a little of my own remembrances here, folks. I'm sure you have plenty of your own, and I'm sure you'll pass along the good old days to your children and your grandchildren.

Again, Merry Christmas! Tis the season for visiting, for rekindling old relationships, and for worshiping the Man who gave us the reason for celebration, Jesus Christ.

Best regards,

Kent Fletcher
