Great Idea!!
I really would like to see a beginner's course in Spanish offered in weekend classes. Those of us who did not get a foreign language in high school or it has been so long that we have forgotten everything we knew about Spanish, would really like to start at the beginning and learn anew.
I previously registered for the Beginner Spanish on
campus.....they said anyone who had taken Spanish in high
school should register for the Intermediate class....on the
first day of class, the teacher asked if anyone had taken
spanish in high school, if so, they should move over to the next (intermediate) class because this one was for beginners only. No one said anything and no one moved.
I bought the $110 required book, and attended class. The first day, the teacher told stories in Spanish and ask the class to tell him what he said. The next day he asked each of us to open the book and read 1 page to him in Spanish. I could not pronounce 80% of the words so I was very frustrated. I attended 2 more days and then dropped the
course. (the Instructor was a Grad Student who had lived in Spain for 2 years and Mexico for 2 years prior to coming to UA) If you have never had spanish, how can you read it or translate a story from Spanish to English. Needless to say, I was very discouraged and have never
tried to take a Spanish class again. (BUT I still want
to learn to read and speak Spanish)
Please suggest that we try to have a weekend course in BEGINNER Spanish if possible!
Thanks,
Nina Barnes
