Subject: Universal Horror: 80 Years Ago

This year marks the 80th Anniversary of three Universal classics.

MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE was released on February 21, 1932. Bela Lugosi rises to the occasion as Dr Mirakle, the proverbial mad scientist who abducts young women for his experiments. Robert Florey directs this adaption of the famous Edgar Allan Poe tale. An imperfect but underrated entry from Universal's horror film heyday.

THE OLD DARK HOUSE made its debut on October 20, 1932, just in time for Halloween. One of director James Whale's four superb Universal horror films (the others being Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man), its stellar cast includes Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, Lilian Bond, Ernest Thesiger and Gloria Stuart.

THE MUMMY saw its big screen premiere on December 22, 1932. Boris Karloff is outstanding in this atmospheric horror picture directed by Karl Freund. Zita Johann, David Manners and Edward Van Sloan are also among the cast.

My father and grandfather got to see these films in the theater when then premiered 80 years ago.

I got to see "The Mummy" and "Murders in the Rue Morgue" 25 years later in 1957 on Shock Theater, which was 55 years ago now...Damn, time flies.

But I didn't get to see "The Old Dark House" until years later because it was unavailable and didn't show up on TV until the 1980s I think.

Anyway, I finally saw ODH when I bought it on VHS in 2001.
