Dan summed it up nicely, the best horror films and the scariest horror films are not necessarily the same. My favorites list would be topped by Frankenstein (1931), and would include Universal classics like Dracula, The Black Cat and Bride of Frankenstein. Hammer's Horror of Dracula and The Brides of Dracula would make the cut too.

Psycho (1960) and Halloween (1978) are great ones as well.

I don't think Hollywood has made many good horror films in the last 20 years, maybe even the last 30 years. Too much emphasis on graphic violence for my taste.

One of the few things Hollywood has done well in the last 10 years is superhero movies. I saw the new Amazing Spider-Man film this week and enjoyed it. The last decade has seen some pretty good comic book-based movies featuring Spider-Man, Batman, Iron Man, The Avengers, etc. They are well done, and appeal to the kid in me. Not all are gems though, The Fantastic Four movies were duds.

But modern day horror films? No thanks, I will stick with the old classics.

Tim got it right about Hollywood not making very many good horror movies in the last 20-30 years.

Thinking about all the horror movies that come to mind that I saw in the last 40 years, I picked out the ones I enjoyed the most.

The list is based on my opinion of how much these 1970s to the present films entertained me, rather than just being scary.

I'm not including any of the later Hammer Horrors because I put them in a league of their own.

Although I can't re-watch any of these films anywhere near as much as I've re-watched a Universal horror Film, the movies on the first list still entertain me whenever I decide to re-watch one of them.

The Exorcist
Jaws
Halloween
Dawn of the Dead
Nosferatu, The Vampire
An American Werewolf in London
The Howling
Wolfen
Poltergeist
Cujo
Child's Play
Halloween H20
Puppet Master 3 - A Cheapo, but guilty pleasure, I like seeing Nazis getting what they deserve.
Wolf
Dawn of the Dead (Remake)

I liked this second batch of Movies when I first saw them, but now I find myself reaching for the remote to FF thru a lot of scenes that bore me.

Dracula (1979)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Humanoids from the Deep
The Shining

Friday The 13th
Friday 13 2

(Friday 13th 5, Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X, and Freddy vs Jason, STUNK)

Halloween 2
Halloween 4
Halloween 5
Halloween 6
Halloween Resurrection
Halloween (Remake)
Halloween 2

Jaws 2 -
(Jaws 3 & 4 STUNK - I can't sit through 3 & 4 at all.)
