The UK based Hammer made many films, in areas of horror, science fiction and others. I have a couple Hammer sets with horror movies and others. Many are re-interpretations of Universal horror oldies, but in color, updated, and a tad spicy at times. You'll find the Dracula like vampires, mummies, asst'd monsters, sequels, and other fare as well. For sake of brevity, just type in Hammer movies or Hammer horror into your favorite search engine for the many titles and info. Wikipedia also good.

My favorite though is a scifi flick from the Quatermass series, based on a older UK TV program. The movie, a gem, is 1967s "Quatermass and the Pit" (aka Five Million Years to Earth)...in color, about an excavation in London's Underground upon discovering an alien object. Odd film in some ways, with multiple concepts, but fascinating to watch. Stars James Donald, Andrew Keir, Barbara Shelley. Sometimes on TCM, and it's on VHS/DVD on line, but prices fluctuate...since it's collectable to some. You need to shop. (FYI, seems they are not sub-titled or close captioned, so know this if hearing impaired or sub titles needed. This seems to apply to many Hammer films.)

Hammer Films of England dates all the way back to 1934, but for most fans the name Hammer conjures images of the series of Gothic horror films they produced from the late 1950s into the 1970s. Here are a few of my favorites.

Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
Hammer Studios had been around a long time, but this is the film that launched them to the top of the horror universe. It was a box office smash on both sides of the Atlantic. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee star, and would soon be to Hammer what Karloff and Lugosi had been to Universal.

Horror of Dracula (1958)
Hammer takes on the Dracula legend, and does it well. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing again take the lead roles, and Lee becomes strongly identified with the Dracula role just as Lugosi had been decades earlier. Many fans see this one as Hammer's finest hour.

The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)
Peter Cushing is Sherlock Holmes and Christopher Lee is Sir Henry Baskerville in this outstanding version of the Conan Doyle novel.

Brides of Dracula (1960)
There is no Dracula in this sequel, but Peter Cushing returns as the intrepid Van Helsing. David Peel is memorable as a charming yet menacing vampire.

The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)
I consider this the best werewolf film ever made outside of Universal’s two classics, Werewolf of London (1935) and The Wolf Man (1941). A young Oliver Reed is excellent in the title role.

Dracula--Prince of Darkness (1965)
The third entry in the Hammer Dracula series, and the second to feature Christopher Lee as Count Dracula. Not as good as the first two, but still atmospheric and suspenseful.

Some other fine Hammer productions include The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), The Mummy (1959) and Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968).

One Million Years B.C. (1966) was a big hit, and helped launch Raquel Welch as a cinema sex symbol. Hammer pushed the envelope of what was acceptable on the screen with films like The Vampire Lovers (1970) and Lust for a Vampire (1971).

Officer Torch is right about Five Million Years to Earth (1967), it is highly recommended. Another good one in the science fiction genre is X the Unknown (1956) starring Dean Jagger.

Before I knew better, I too used to think that "Hammer Films" began in 1957 with "The Curse of Frankenstein."

My love for Hammer films began with "Horror of Dracula" when my father took me to see it around May or June of 1958. Several months after I got hooked on the Universal horror films, starting with Bela Lugosi's "Dracula" on Shock Theater, in Oct 1957.

After Horror of Dracula, I managed to see just about all of the Hammer horrors in the theater. The last one I saw in a theater was "Dracula AD 1972"

Hammer's, Dracula, Frankenstein, and Mummy films in order of my Preference:

DRACULA:
Horror of Dracula
Brides of Dracula
Scars of Dracula
Dracula Has Risen From the Grave
Dracula Prince of Darkness
Dracula AD
Satanic Rites of Dracula
Taste the Blood of Dracula.

FRANKENSTEIN:
Curse of Frankenstein
Revenge of Frankenstein
Evil of Frankenstein
Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed
Frankenstein Created Woman
Horror of Frankenstein

MUMMY:
The Mummy
Blood From the Mummy's Tomb
Curse of the Mummy's Tomb
The Mummy's Shroud

MY TOP 10 HAMMER HORROR:
Horror of Dracula
Brides of Dracula
Five Million Years to Earth
Curse of Frankenstein
Curse of the Werewolf
The Mummy
Hound of The Baskervilles
Scars of Dracula
Dracula Has Risen From the Grave
Dracual Prince of Darkness
