Subject: Norma Eberhardt

Actress Norma Eberhardt recently passed away. She is best known among horror fans for her role in The Return of Dracula (1958).

A native of Oakhurst, New Jersey, her first film appearance was a bit part in the Martin & Lewis comedy Sailor Beware (1952). She later had guest roles on a number of television shows, including Whirlybirds, Dragnet and Hogan's Heroes.

So many of our beloved entertainers from yesteryear are leaving us... seems there's a void in present day entertainment, CG and many modern day films don't cut it for me...I need story, plot, laughs, fine acting. Norma Eberhardt, recently Cliff Robertson, so many others..left us. Condolences to their families. Many works are still hopefully on film to enjoy, some not often shown on TV.

Tim, you jogged an oldie TV program to mind, which I enjoyed way back as a kid, and frankly never saw much in terms of repeats since, so if you ever come across the series or eps of... The Whirlybirds, let me know. Thanks

I have heard of the series but don't recall ever seeing it. It originally ran from 1957-1960, and apparently was seldom shown in repeats. The show was popular in both the United States and the UK during its original run.

Kenneth Tobey was the star, best known to science fiction fans for his role in The Thing (1951), aka The Thing from Another World.

Sky King was another aviation oriented series that was popular in the 1950s but seldom seen afterwards. It starred Kirby Grant and Gloria Winters.

Hmm...Sky King...he was the flying cowboy in his twin engine plane fighting off bad guys on the range. Admittedly, as a tad older adolescent young man, I felt affection towards his pretty cowgirl daughter Penny. I believe a few episodes from that series exist. I saw them available in a catalogue and on line at a place called Nina's discount records I believe in PA near Philly. No, not a plug....just info, for those who may be interested in a glimpse of the old series. Would enjoy a glimpse of Whirlybirds though, for ole tyme sakes.

I started watching "Whirlybirds" when it premiered in NYC in 1957. The promo trailer for the show caught my eye when one scene showed a gorilla on the loose. I watched the show fairly regularly, but I don't remember the episodes now. All I can remember of the gorilla episode was when the gorilla climbed on a rooftop and they tried to drop a net on it.

Whirlybirds was rerun for a short time in NYC in the summer of 1961.

I watched "Sky King" from 1956 until it was cancelled in early 1959. In the fall of 1959 Sky King was rerun on Saturdays at 12 noon on CBS until Aug 1966.

The CBN network, (Family Net) reran Sky King in the late 80s for about a year.

All 72 episodes of Sky King are still available, but usually the first season is rarely shown for some reason.

Gloria Winters played Sky's niece Penny and for a short time Ron Hagerthy played Sky's nephew, Penny's brother, Clipper. The plane was called the Songbird.

Hey, yeah Dan....the Songbird....that's the ticket, the name of the twin engine plane, and now I'm remembering some brother involved also, and Penny flew the plane as well at times, I vaguely recall.

Pardon me while I chuckle, it just sounds funny about the gorilla in the Whirlybirds. You think those films still exist in some vault, or think were maybe lost/destroyed? You recall the channel? If so, I'll email 'em, not that they'll respond, rarely do I get any response, but will give it a try anyway. Thanks for info.

All 111 episodes of "Whirlybirds" still exist, but they haven't been seen since the early 60s due to poor ratings in re-runs.

The name change to "Copter Patrol" might have had something to do with those poor ratings when "Whirlybirds" was re-run?

"Whirybirds" was syndicated and aired in NYC on local WPIX ch 11 on Thursday nights at 7:30 PM. It ran on different days and times in other cities in the U.S.

CBS/Desilu produced Whirlybirds but have no plans to release it to DVD, so far anyway. But there's always hope because Rod Cameron's "State Trooper" and "Coronado 9" have finally made to DVD after years of Cameron's estate saying his shows will probably never see the light of day again.

Rod Cameron owned all the rights to his syndicted shows. His first TV show was "City Detective."

Torch, I found out there is an 8 episode DVD of Whirlybirds offered on Amazon.com.

I don't know about the quality of the DVD, but I'm going to check into it more.
