Subject: The White Hell of Pitz Palu (1930)

This German mountaineering film was bought by Universal in 1930 and modified into a sound film, with a continuous music score by Heinz Roemheld. The 133 minute running time was cut down to 79 minutes by Universal. Many of the studio's films and serials had footage that was culled from 'White Hell of Pitz Palu', including some footage that was left out of the 1930 film and today, over 100 reels are in Library of Congress, never to be touched. For example, some aerial shots in 'Conquers the Universe' of the snow-covered slopes in one scene were outtakes that didn't make it into the German and US cuts.

Rick..there's the short version with the Roemheld music, including that march of the torches. I got mine from Grapevine awhile back. Really liked it but pix, sound so-so. Later, Kino released longer version, with beautifully restored video, BUT altogether different music. It was costlier. I was a tad disappointed about the music, but the visuals were breathtaking. I wouldn't be surprised if many films "borrowed" from this. Possibly Lost Horizon, and likely others. It's a good film, even if your not into mountain climbing, hiking or hate the cold. Good story..and it's a silent movie! I lean toward the Grapevine version because of the music. Whichever, it's quite a good film. There's info on this, 5th one down on FG links here.

The Kino edition is a surviving nitrate print they found in Germany (the original was lost) and a compamy restored it in 1998. A new music score was used, as the original silent film had no sound. I have 2 copies of the Grapevine edition (Universal) with Heinz Roemheld's score. He wrote and recorded 128 music cues for the Universal version. I have the cue list. The film stored at LOC is the only surviving 35mm interpositives of the German film and any prints Universal has in their vault, other than the print used by Kino. Grapevine's is a 16mm print that was in the collection of the late Bob Lee.
