Subject: Ronald Neame

Ronald Neame (1911-2010), the noted English producer, director and screenwriter, passed away last month at age 99.

He produced Great Expectations (1946), Universal's acclaimed adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel, directed by David Lean. Neame also contributed to the screenplay.

He also produced One Woman's Story (1949) starring Ann Todd and Claude Rains. Once again David Lean was the director. The film was seen in the UK under the title The Passionate Friends.

Ronald Neame is probably best-known for directing the 1972 blockbuster The Poseidon Adventure for 20th Century Fox.

Universal acquired US dist rights for a good number of UK film productions and when the prints were flown here, the studio would cut in new titles for US audiences. The profits at the box office helped keep them going. I have some of the films recorded off TCM.
