Joe Mantell was not very well known, but never the less as Tim said, he was a good character actor.

Besides the films and TV shows Tim mentioned, Joe was in a a good two part ep of "The Untouchables,"
"The Unhired Assassin"

I also liked him in an episode of "One Step Beyond,"
"The Stone Cutter."

In this ep. Walter Burke plays a cemetary stone cutter who can see into the near future and knows when someone is going to die. As soon as he sees the vision, he prematurely etches the persons name and death date on the stone. In the episode, the person who the cutter was etching, was Mantell's character's father.
And then when the father finally died, Mantell blamed the stone cutter.

I remember when I first saw this One Step Beyond episode, I felt bad for Joe Mantell's character. Because even though he commits murder, I felt it was somewhat justified.

One Step Beyond started as a syndicated series in 1959, the same year that the more famous Twilight Zone launched on CBS. John Newland was the host, and while I would say The Twilight Zone was the better of the two series, One Step Beyond was frequently a suspenseful and entertaining program.

Unfortunately I haven't seen "The Stone Cutter", the episode Dan refers to that includes Joe Mantell in its cast.

I sometimes get Joe Mantell confused with Joe Maross because of the similarity of their names. Maross (1923-2009) was also a prolific character actor and, like Mantell, appeared in a couple of Twilight Zone episodes ("Third from the Sun" and "The Little People").

Actually One Step Beyond began on ABC in Jan 1959 as "Alcoa Presents:" With One Step Beyond as a sub title.
The show ran for three seasons on ABC. And when it went into syndication it was called One Step Beyond.

One Step Beyond ran in syndication from early 1962 until the late 70s. Then the Sci-fi channel ran the show for a couple of years in the 90s I believe.

One Step Beyond is available on DVD. And you can see some episodes online.

You are correct, Dan, it did originally run on ABC. I thought it started in syndication, but looked it up and found that I was mistaken.

I have seen a number of episodes, including the famous "Night of April 14" featuring a young pre-Avengers Patrick Macnee in the cast.
