When Christine sings for her life in the Phantom's lair, and you hear the two pianos echoing each other. Lizst, on the stage above, and Claudin, below. Add the gosh awful performance of Nelson Eddy for humour, and the sublime Claude Rains for Heaven, and you've really got something!

A magnificent production starring the incomparable Claude Rains, this is definitely grade "A" Universal from top to bottom. I believe it is one of the few Universals of the era to be shot in color? Gothic black & white cinematography is the perfect vehicle for Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, et al, and I would not care to see them colorized. Likewise, lush technicolor seems a perfect fit for this particular incarnation of the timeless Phantom of the Opera tale.
