This article documents the history and the famous sign I saw so many times when I grew up there.

An interesting look back at an iconic piece of Hollywood history. The term Hollywoodland has become synonymous with old Hollywood, as the article notes the "land" was removed from the sign in 1949.

The word Hollywoodland was more recently employed as the title of a 2006 film about the life and mysterious death of George Reeves, television's Superman of the 1950s. Ben Affleck does a nice job as Reeves.

I've always wanted to see that sign "in the flesh". One of my favourite pictures is of Colin Clive on the roof of his residential hotel..La Belle Tour (The Hollywood Tower)
You can see the "Hollywoodland" sign in the distance!

I've never seen the famous sign either, as I have never visited L.A.

I only visited once...back in 1972. We were living in New Jersey at the time, and my brother lived in the Bay Area.

Since my Dad wanted to visit a business associate in West Hollywood,he was willing to spend ONE day in "movie town", as he put it. He was bound and determined to get the "monsters" out of my system. We went to Universal, and rode on the tram...and yes..the ghosts were there. They will ALWAYS be there, for Universal belongs to THEM, and always will. After that, we walked up the boulevard of stars, and I "touched toes" at the stars of Karloff and Lugosi. On the way back, I hit every bookstore in the vicinity. What riches! 4 books and 20 stills. All my vacation savings and 3 weeks advance on my allowance. My mom didn't approve of "monsters", but she definitely understood movies. I got her a still of Sam Spade with the "Black Bird".

I will never forget.

The first time I went to Hollywood was in 1962 with my parents. I can remember seeing the Hollywood sign, Universal Studios, Grauman's Theater, The Brown Derby, and Dino's where "77 Sunset Strip," one of my favorite TV shows was filmed.

The second time was in 1991. By thta time, The Brown Derby was gone, and so was Dino's.

I took in Universal City, The Queen Mary and The Spruce Goose.

I tried to take a look at the "Beverly Hillbilies" Mansion, but all I could see was the roof.

I went to Grauman's again, which was changed to Mann's, but was basically the same with a few new prints in the cement.

I climbed those long steps on Vendome st where The Laurel & Hardy short, "The Music Box" and The Three Stooges short, "An Ache in Every Stake" was filmed. That was quite a climb.

Alas, the old Hollywood is gone now, but thankfully we still have the film classics, and those old Hollywood Newsreels to watch.
