Favorites in Crnological Order:

FRANKENSTEIN and BRIDE of FRANKENSTEIN: Colin Clive as Dr Henry Frankenstein.
Henry was not your usual mad scientist who would sacrifice human lives for his goals.

THE RAVEN: Bela Lugosi as Dr Vollin.
The rejection of the woman he loved brought out his madness to the hilt.

THE INVISIBLE RAY: Boris Karloff as Janus Ruhk.
Fairly decent doctor at first, but went totally mad because of his experiments.

MAN-MADE MONSTER: Lionel Atwill as Dr Paul Rigas.
Completely mad doctor. Human life meant nothing to Dr Rigas.

GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN: Lionel Atwill as Dr Bohmer.

CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN: John Carradine as Dr Walters.
Human life meant nothing to Dr Walters either.

THE MAD GHOUL: George Zucco as Dr Morris.
Another completely mad doctor. To begin with his experiments were really nothing that would benefit science.
Then he used it to get his young assistant out of the way so he could move in on the assistant's girl friend.

HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN: Boris Karloff as Dr Niemann.
I think this was Karloff at his maddest. His brain tranfers were totally off the wall.

FRANKENSTEIN (1931) and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) with the great Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein.

As Dan alludes, Henry Frankenstein was not your typical mad scientist with no scruples. He is a good and decent man who is overwhelmed by his boundless intellectual and scientific curiosities. In FRANKENSTEIN when his monstrous creation drowns little Maria, Henry tries to hunt him down with the same enthusiasm as the rest of the villagers. In BRIDE OF FRANKESTEIN Doctor Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) is willing to do anything to get the organs needed to create a mate for the monster, but Henry Frankenstein has qualms and at one point questions Karl (Dwight Frye) about the matter.

Lionel Atwill is always fun to watch, and does nice work as Doctor Ralph Benson in THE MAD DOCTOR OF MARKET STREET (1942). His role in THE STRANGE CASE OF DOCTOR RX (1942) is smaller, but he makes the most of it as well.

I have to agree with Dan about Boris Karloff as Dr Niemann in HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1944). A classic mad doctor, complete with his loyal servant, Daniel (J. Carrol Naish).

Tim
