FRANKENSTEIN (1931) and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) with the great Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein.

As Dan alludes, Henry Frankenstein was not your typical mad scientist with no scruples. He is a good and decent man who is overwhelmed by his boundless intellectual and scientific curiosities. In FRANKENSTEIN when his monstrous creation drowns little Maria, Henry tries to hunt him down with the same enthusiasm as the rest of the villagers. In BRIDE OF FRANKESTEIN Doctor Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) is willing to do anything to get the organs needed to create a mate for the monster, but Henry Frankenstein has qualms and at one point questions Karl (Dwight Frye) about the matter.

Lionel Atwill is always fun to watch, and does nice work as Doctor Ralph Benson in THE MAD DOCTOR OF MARKET STREET (1942). His role in THE STRANGE CASE OF DOCTOR RX (1942) is smaller, but he makes the most of it as well.

I have to agree with Dan about Boris Karloff as Dr Niemann in HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1944). A classic mad doctor, complete with his loyal servant, Daniel (J. Carrol Naish).

Bear in mind that the above mentioned MAD DOCTOR OF MARKET STREET and THE STRANGE CASE OF DOCTOR RX are Universal B-pictures and therefore not as polished as James Whale's pair of Frankenstein classics. Still, they are fun pictures, and Lionel Atwill had a real knack for portraying sinister characters.

I agree Tim, Lionel Atwill has a great knack for playing sinister characters in any film he was in.

Atwill was a joy to watch in Paramount's "MURDERS IN THE ZOO." I actually hated to see him die at the end, even though he was the villain.
