Subject: Gift of Gab (1934)

Two years before landing in the newspaper game in The Girl on the Front Page, Edmund Lowe and Gloria Stuart gave the radio business a run in this rarely seen Universal picture directed by Karl Freund.

Edmund Lowe is Phillip Gabney, a smooth talking hustler with big ambitions. He works his way into a radio announcing job at WGAB and dubs himself "The Great Gabney". Gloria Stuart is Barbara Kelton, the station’s program director. Other notables in the cast include Alice White (Secret of the Chateau), Sterling Holloway and Andy Devine. Both Hugh O’Connell as Gabney’s pal and Victor Moore as Colonel Trivers give memorable performances.

Edmund Lowe and Gloria Stuart are excellent in their leading roles, but much of the film is devoted to showcasing various radio and musical luminaries of the day, including Phil Baker, Gene Austin, Ruth Etting and Ethel Waters. There are cameo bits by several Hollywood film stars. One of my favorite scenes is the presentation of a "blood curdling murder mystery" radio skit, featuring appearances by Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff!

While the film contains its share of comedy and music, there are some dramatic touches in the script as well, as Gabney is fired for making a phony radio broadcast and must prove himself again to his listening audience and to his girl.

Back in the day when I was a kid and I first saw "The Gift of Gab," I was disappointed as usual because it wasn't what I expected. I thought it was going to be a horror film. The only reason I wanted to see it was for Karloff and Lugosi, but they only appeared for a very short time, which added to my disappointment.

But in later viewings, especially after I had become a fan of Edmund Lowe and Gloria Stuart, I enjoyed the movie very much. Today I would recommend this film to any fan of Lowe or Gloria Stuart.

And the scenes with Karloff and Lugosi is an added bonus.
