Dr Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) in Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935).

Dr Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) in Bride of Frankenstein (1935).

Dr Jack Griffin (Claude Rains) in The Invisible Man (1933).

Dr Richard Vollin (Bela Lugosi) in The Raven (1935).

Dr. Mirakle (Bela Lugosi) in Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932).

Dr Niemann (Boris Karloff) in House of Frankenstein (1944).

Some of these doctors did not start out as mad, but ended up that way because, in the words of Jack Griffin, they "meddled in things that man must leave alone!"

I remember Lionel Atwill as Doctor Bohmer in Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), but haven't seen him as the title character in The Mad Doctor of Market Street (1942). He also played mad doctors in a variety of non-Universal pictures.

Tim picked some of the same mad docs I'm picking.

Though I never really thought of Henry Frankenstein as a bonafied mad doctor, never the less, he was.

Henry Frankenstein: "Frankenstein" and "Bride"

Dr Mirakle: Murders in the Rue Morgue

Jack Griffin: The Invisible Man

Dr Praetorius: Bride of Frankenstein

Dr Vollin: The Raven

Dr Janos Ruhk: (Karloff) The Invisible Ray

Dr Paul Rigas: (Atwill) Man Made Monster

Dr Ralph Benson: (Atwill) Mad Doctor of Market Street

Dr Bohmer: (Atwill) Ghost of Frankenstein

Dr Sigmund Walters: (Carradine) Captive Wild Woman

Dr Alfred Morris: (Zucco) The Mad Ghoul

Dr Niemann: (Karloff) House of Frankenstein

Karloff, Lugosi, Atwill, and Zucco, played many other mad doctors in horror films outside of Universal.

Some excellent choices, Dan. I can't believe I overlooked Dr Janos Ruhk of The Invisible Ray!

I don't think I've seen The Mad Doctor of Market Street or Captive Wild Woman, as least not in a very long time.

Atwill had a great face for playing mad doctors.

Maybe forgettable mad doctors. Jungle Woman. Per IMDb, a 1944 Universal work. Strange movie. John Carradine, scream queen, Evelyn Ankers, but think Dr. Fletcher by J.Carrol Naish is the mad one. There are matters of turning apes into humans; vice versa. Don't recall (and tape from garage sale loaded with dropouts--deep sixed.) But, perhaps another mad doc to add to list, though not necessarily favorite.

Another tape at same garage sale...What a deal! It was The Invisible Man's Revenge. Per IMDb, a 1944 Universal movie. As I recall, kind of watered down version of original. Invisibility involved of course; also recall Carradine. Again, per IMDb, his character was a Dr. Drury. Scream Queen Ankers again in cast, and a favorite Ramar of the Jungle, Jon Hall. But, maybe we've another, Dr. Drury, to add to list.
