Subject: East of Java (1935)

This seldom seen Universal adventure stars Charles Bickford as tough-guy fugitive Harvey Bowers. To avoid apprehension Bowers bribes his way onto a steamer ship run by Captain Wong Bo (Leslie Felton). Among the passengers are Americans Larry Page (Frank Albertson) and Ann Martin (Elizabeth Young). Also on board is circus animal trainer Hans Muller (Siegfried Rumann) and his cargo of wild animals. Some favorite moments include:

Captain Wong Bo hears a radio broadcast about a fugitive named Red McGovern traveling under an alias. The reward for his capture is twenty thousand dollars.

The chess game between Bowers and Wong Bo.

The steamer is caught in a typhoon, forcing everyone to abandon ship by lifeboat. Muller's circus cats also escape.

The passengers take refuge on an island, watching as the ship sinks into the ocean.

The macho Bowers appoints himself leader of the group, and when Captain Wong Bo objects, Bowers replies "Hey listen, that command of yours went on the rocks with that worm-eatin' tub of yours. Here it's a new deal, and I'm tops. Got it?"

Muller's hungry circus beasts begin to attack and kill the survivors one by one.

Page finds an ingenious way to send a message to civilization.

Bowers discovers that Wong Bo had mentioned the twenty thousand reward in the message. The two men clash, and Wong Bo plunges to his death.

Both Harvey Bowers and Larry Page have developed an interest in Ann, and it appears Page has prevailed.

In an attempt to bury the hatchet, Bowers takes the pistol away from Page, then gives it right back to him.

Muller hallucinates that he is again The Great Muller, and walks straight into the lions.

The rescue plane arrives and spots the castaways.

Bowers wards off the lions while Larry and Ann escape.

Once safely aboard the search plane, one of the rescuers says "that was McGovern the fugitive, wasn't it?" Page shakes his head and replies "That was Bowers...a real man." Ann adds "You'll never know how real."

This film is a gem. Charles Bickford was almost killed by a "tame" lion when they were filming. The animal trainer shot it dead and Bickford had to be taken to the hospital immediately. They saved him or he would have died.
