Subject: About The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)

I can’t remember where I red that, but I think this is an interesting story. The famous whipping scene as been reduced to only one lash because of the censorship (we barely see the second one because the scene ended). If you remember correctly we only see Quasimodo’s reaction, not the whipping itself because there is a cut to the crowd reaction. Here’s some questions. Is it possible that they builded up such an elaborate set for such a minimum impact? An what about Lon Chaney’s magnificent and also very elaborate make-up? ( that is the only time we saw him topless) Can we put everything on the censorship because this is 1923? I personally think so. But supposedly there is a few extra feet of film hidden out there somewhere or maybe worst, lost forever. We’ll probably never know.

Steve

P.S. Sorry for my bad english.

I've only seen Hunchback once on TV several years ago, and I guess I didn't pay much attention to the flogging scene.

I don't recall ever hearing about this before, but after reading your post, it sure sounds like there may have been some scenes edited out. I'll have to go through my horror books and magazines and see if I can find anything about this.

Here's an opinion. I find that flogging part one of the saddest scenes in filmdom. (Sure, there are others but that hits a raw nerve.) It's sad to watch, and often lingers in the mind. It's kind of the feeling one gets when watching the Elephant Man.
I haven't watched Hunchback in awhile, and though it is a masterpiece, I feel great pity and sadness for Quasimodo in certain scenes. I prefer the 1939 version...but dunno, maybe the sound worsens certain elements. Some I know prefer not to watch such movies at all! I imagine censors, or those in programming recognize such elements of pity and sadness, and perhaps delete as they see fit. Of course there would be many opinions regarding this.
OK, time to lighten up..I see my vintage Farmer Alfalfa (aka Farmer Gray) cartoons came in yesterday, maybe I can get a few laughs later. Take care guys, and...Hey! Feel free to cross over the light bridge to the Flash Gordon site. It's not just limited to FG, but beware! We love to kid around. Regards from aka Officer Torch
