Subject: R.I.P. Perry

Dear Tracey, Renee and Jacquie -

It is with GREAT sadness that I heard the news about the death of your father.

I worked with Perry at Atlantic Records from 1977 - 1986 and kept in touch with him during my subsequent adventures at MTV and other record labels.

To say that Perry...or "Buford" as we called him in those days....was a larger-than-life and colorful character..and a HUGE favorite of all of us...would be a massive understatement.

When Michael Klenfner formed the Atlantic Records "road artist development & touring department" at Atlantic in 1978.....I came under Perry's supervision as well as that of the label promotion department.

Your Dad was a great teacher, loyal friend and a tireless and brilliant record executive....just one of the
greatest, funniest and warmest individuals you would ever meet. He was amazing in his work and the
absolute tops in the game, period. Any artist who received the "Perry Cooper Treatment" was lucky indeed
...and I'm sure you will hear that from many people.

He was also a relentless and creative rabble-rouser and practical joker on the road. He shot me through the
grease more times than I can count...and I had to work long and hard to get him back. There was really only one time when I turned the tables on him...when he thought he had stuck me with a $4,000 bill for a Yes band dinner
at some 5 star French restaurant in Chicago after the show. In fact, he conspired with Yes manager Brian
Lane and the band to "stick the new guy"(me)with this obscenely expensive dinner check....knowing full well that I would be in DEEP shit with the New York office financial guy (known as "Darth Vader"...yeah, that bad). What your
Dad did not realize was that this restaurant was connected to the hotel we were all staying at (Chicago's
Astor Towers...long gone)....and had this cooperative relationship with this stuffy and overpriced French restaurant.
In essence, I took the bill to the front desk of the hotel...added on a $1,000 tip to the $4,000 bill (to add insult to injury)
....and identified myself as "Perry Cooper" and ask that they put the charge on my room. Since "Perry Cooper" had made the arrangements to put up Yes and a large number of people at the hotel...anything he said...WENT. The poor night guy at the hotel front desk never knew he was NOT really speaking with the "real" Perry Cooper....and the 5 Grand was put on his room bill.

Perry never knew what hit him when he tried to check out of the Astor Towers Hotel at 700am the next morning....
and his credit card was unable to cover this bill. All hell broke loose and I've been looking over my shoulder
ever since....

This is truly the end of a unique and wonderful era.....he was one of a kind and I'm fortunate to have known him.

God bless Perry....and you and your family as well. You have our heartfelt sympathies and prayers.

Warmest Regards,

Sam Kaiser

>Dear Renee -
hi I just found out your father died in 2005 by accident. I don't know if you remember me, but I use to hang with Perry at the Cat Club, NYC in 1988 and you use to accompany him. We became friends and then lost touch. I would love to see you or speak with you. If you happen to see this message, please contact me, thanks Fran
