3 July
Sarah was surprised when a Fed-Ex package was delivered and was addressed to her. She opened it and found a large package of pictures of all the poses the twins had made on their shoot. They were so good that she called Harm in and they went thru every one of them. She placed the phone on speaker and called Brenda. They talked about the pictures and Brenda told them that she was really impressed and wanted the twins to work for her any time they could.
She relayed that she had been in touch with the Wrigley people and they wanted to see a large photo layout of the twins by 1 November. She told them she would collect the best pictures as they went along and final pictures in nicer dress clothes would be done in September and October. Sarah thanked her and told her they would set up a schedule of free times.
7 July
The morning found Harm and Sarah in full embrace and making love as this was the day to pick up the girls and return to living in separate rooms. It was going to be strange for them since they had been sleeping together and making love in the same bed since moving in. They finally got ready for the trip begrudgingly because they didn’t want their honeymoon to end.
They picked up the girls and heard about all of the progress both had made in the different dives and the swim races. They told that the camp director had called the swim coach at their new school and had both placed on the swim team for their age group. They bubbled all the way back toward DC. They stopped at Ruby Tuesdays and had dinner and let the girls talk until the questions started.
They wanted to know about the painting and everything about their new room. Sarah described everything and told of how it got painted. Sarah told them of the pictures from the photo shoot and how pleased Ms. Brenda was with them. The final leg home was quiet as the girls gave up to sleep. Harm and Sarah talked until it was time to get them awake again and up into their room. They made sure they were tucked in before returning to the kitchen.
(S) This is going to be different. I was getting used to sleeping naked and sharing myself with you whenever either of us wanted it. This is going to be like not being married to you any more.
(H) I know. It will not be for long. They leave for church camp on the 21st.
(S) Keep telling your self and me that. I haven’t ever felt this fulfilled in so many great ways.
(H) We can get thru a couple of weeks, can’t we?
(S) Yes, but I don’t want to.
They kissed and then parted ways as they returned to their own rooms.
Sunday
8 July
It helped that the next day was Sunday and allowed them to get back into the groove with the twins. They picked up Trish and Frank at the airport at 15:00 and returned to the new house. Harm and Frank moved their luggage into the room that Trish had chosen. Harm, Frank and the twins spent time outside walking around and looking at the property as Sarah and Trish sat and caught up.
(T) Have things changed between you and Harm?
(S) Yes. We are working on becoming a family and are together most of the time.
(T) What about love and sex?
(S) Coming along very nicely. Harm seems satisfied that I am what he wants for the long-term and we complete each other so well. He is what I want for forever.
(T) What about the girls?
(S) You will notice when they talk, they now call him dad. It has been that way for a couple of months. They love him. They have talked to me asking that he adopt them if we get married.
(T) Is marriage a possibility?
(S) Yes, a very strong possibility.
(T) Well, welcome to the family Sarah.
Sarah thanked Trish for coming to be with the twins during the days before they left for church camp and Trish thought if was going to be a great time to bond with the girls that may soon be her grandchildren. She told that Frank was looking forward to getting to know the girls and was glad they would have someone to take all over DC sightseeing. Sarah gave Trish the latest booklet explaining all the tourist attractions in DC and pertinent facts they would need to know.
After Harm, Frank and the twins returned, Laura and Vicky wanted to show Trish their new room and all the ladies went upstairs for a tour and a talk.
Harm and Frank talked about many things and Frank explained what things he wanted to see first and they tried to set up a sightseeing schedule for about 6 hours of each day. Harm tried to help by knowing when traffic would be a problem and scheduling accordingly.
(F) Is Sarah the one?
(H) Yes. She is it for me.
(F) You said they gave you a rent with option to buy. Would you like to own this or are there things you don’t like about it?
(H) I would change a couple of things but owning might be OK. We haven’t been here long enough to make up our minds.
(F) Thanks for asking us to come for the summer vacation time for the girls. We want to get to know them.
(H) Dad, I want us to settle on a new understanding if it is OK with you. We now have room enough for you to visit any time you want to. Stay with us when you are in town for business or when you have vacation time. We would like you to get to know the girls and they you. Without something happens, I intend to ask Sarah to marry me later on and we want you guys to be a bigger part of the family.
(F) I think we would like that. Thanks for the invitation.
The ladies up stairs had talked about many things and the weeks they would enjoy sightseeing. The girls had been included in everything and felt totally at ease to talk to their mom in front of Trish.
(V) Did you and Harm have a good time while we were gone?
(S) Yes. He and I have become closer.
(L) Does closer mean that he wants to be around with us all the time?
(S) Yes. That is why we decided to share the rent and move into this house. He wants to make sure he is here for you girls as well as for me. He is part of our family now. We will all need time to get used to the changes.
(L) Has he talked about marriage with you?
(S) Yes. He wants us to take time to make sure everything is OK before we decide.
(V) Is he going to adopt us?
(S) I mentioned it to him one time and he said he could hardly wait for that to happen. He loves both of you.
(L) Mommy, are you happy with daddy?
(S) Yes. My life is going to be complete with you girls, Jerry, Harm, Trish, and Frank. I am a very lucky mom.
(V) (to Trish) Are you going to be our grandmother and is Frank going to be our grandfather?
(T) If you girls will let us. I really think it would be cool if you would.
(L) I think that would be great. Someday Vicky and I will have the same last name as daddy and mommy. How cool would that be?
The rest of the evening was pleasant and everyone settled in for the night by 22:00.
The next couple weeks passed by as Harm and Sarah rode to work together each day and let Frank and Trish use the jeep to sightsee with the girls. Sarah reviewed each day’s planned activities with Trish each morning and always knew when the house would be vacant. Harm and Sarah spent intimate time giving up their lunch time for each other at least on Tuesday and Friday. In just a couple of months, it had changed from once every 4 or 5 weeks to every two or three days and that wasn’t quite enough most of the time.
14 July
Sarah and Trish were up early and with Harm’s help got ready to take the twins for their photo shoot with Ms. Brenda. Trish wanted to and Harm let her substitute for him for the day. They made it to the studio and repeated what had happened earlier. The clothing was heavy winter clothing so the whole place was freezing cold to get everyone in the right mood. Harm and Frank stopped by after lunch and watched and encouraged the twins as they posed. The shoot was over at 17:00 and as the twins redressed, Sarah went by the office to sign papers and pick up their checks for the days they had worked. She had to take a double-take at the amount finding it 4 times more than she imagined it would be. She tucked them away quickly and went back to pick up the girls and go home.
Harm was amazed at what the girls had earned for the two days work. Sarah wanted ¾ of everything they earned to be placed in a college fund for their future and Harm agreed. Sarah could only dream that the girls could have the kind of education only wealthy people could afford.
The time passed quickly for Frank and Trish and before they knew it was July 20 and the girls were going to church camp the next day. Harm took everyone to Lacinda’s that Friday evening as a celebration and a “thank you” for what they had done. The meal was good and Sarah was amazed at how her twins had bonded with Frank and Trish and visa versa. They had been under Frank and Trish’s care for 13 days and could not have been happier. It was now Poppa and Nana instead of Frank and Trish. The girls were delighted and couldn’t help but notice that their mom and dad couldn’t keep their hands off each other.
Harm used the jeep the next morning to load all the luggage and prepare to take Nana and Poppa to the airport. Sarah spent some private time for conversation with Trish before breakfast and both seemed happy when they came back into the kitchen. After breakfast, Sarah said her goodbyes at home so she could finish packing the twin’s things. Harm and the twins took Nana and Poppa to the airport and saw them off. Their visit had been fun for everyone and goodbyes included many tears. The ride back home was quite at first and then things got back to normal.
Harm again loaded the jeep but with backpacks and bags for the girls. They pulled away at 13:00 with a full car. The trip was about 1 ½ hours and then it was to meet with the councilors and finally move their things into the right cabin. After meeting with other campers sharing the same cabin, Harm and Sarah had a pow-wow with the girls. Sarah gave them a prepaid cell phone to be kept in their box in the cabin and gave them instructions on how to turn it on every evening and when to call home. They talked about anything the girls had on their mind and finally gave them their camp chits which could be used at the camp store to buy what they wanted. Harm and Sarah stayed and joined the girls for vespers which was held at 17:30. Since many fun activities were planned for the evening, they said their goodbyes to the girls and left them to their activities. It was tough for Sarah but the girls were OK when they left.
The drive home was quite and warm. They discussed everything that had happened over the past couple of weeks and were delighted that the family was coming together. They enjoyed each other as they drove and were completely ready for each other when they arrived home. Their movement was a straight line to the master suite with clothing scattered on the way. Sarah screamed happily as Harm entered her and made her feel complete. Neither one lasted any time as pent up demand overflowed quickly. They took their time and enjoyed more before getting up and going to the Beltway Burger for food. They remembered their first date and talked about the changes that had happened in a short time.
The following 13 days were more like a honeymoon than the first time they shared their bed. Since they didn’t need to paint and get the house ready, they spent a lot more time there. They experimented and tried almost anything a time or two and were totally enjoying every thing. Since they needed to be connected, neither could or wanted to think of a better way to do it. Their time together was bliss until Harm was informed that he was to spend the whole month of September aboard the Henry to give the resident Jag his vacation time and to complete his flight quals.
Sarah immediately started gathering names of sitters and retired people that might be able to watch after the twins for the time between school let out and when she would get home at night. Harm helped by making sure people on the lists was real and not a threat to the girls. They chose 4 different people and had the list ready when they went to pick up the girls.
Saturday
4 August
They picked up the girls on Saturday and listened to all of the fun camp things on the way home. It was evident to Sarah that both were exhausted. After getting home and being properly fed, the twins were in bed and asleep by 19:00. Sarah and Harm worked together and unpacked the rather strong smelling backpacks and took the clothes straight to the washer. It took time to do the 4 loads and finally things were back to reasonably normal. Sunday was a quite laid back day as the twins needed more sleep and love from their parents.
Since the girls had 2 weeks of summer vacation remaining before school started, Sarah took leave for the first week and they would be picking up Jerry on Saturday for his 3 weeks off before the fall quarter was to begin. Sarah had made a list of everything she wanted to do with the girls and one week seemed like it would not be long enough. New school clothes, required items, and back packs had to be tried on and altered if need be. She also talked it over with Harm and Grams and wanted to take the girls to Grams place for a couple of days.
She and the girls left on Wednesday and returned on Saturday before Harm returned from the academy with Jerry. The trip had been what she felt she and the girls had needed for so long. She needed all three of them to be accepted as family members that belonged to Harm and Grams never left any doubt of that. The two Sarahs had become bonded friends and the twins loved them both.
11 August
Harm met Jerry at the academy and wanted to spend some time reliving old memories. They walked and looked at things that held importance in Harm’s memories. Harm told Jerry all about the new house and how things had changed. Harm explained that he and Sarah had become much closer and the girls were calling him daddy now. He confided that he intended to propose marriage to Sarah before Christmas if things continued as they were now. They returned to his quarters and carried all the bags to the car to be loaded. Harm discussed the sitter situation and Jerry gladly volunteered to help out. They took their time going home so Jerry could ask questions and get his footing back with the family situation.
It was like old-home week when they pulled into the driveway to the three waiting lovely ladies. Everyone greeted each other with hugs and kisses. Everyone helped carry Jerry’s bags and he chose the room he would stay in. They spent the rest of the evening telling each other of everything that had happened over the summer. Finally, as the hour grew later, everyone separated to their rooms and Harm and Sarah were left in the kitchen.
(S) Its good to have everyone home. What am I going to do without you for a whole month? Being in Pennsylvania for 4 days without you was too long for me.
(H) You are going to suck it up and survive just like I am. This will be the first time longer than the 7 days you were in California and we had not been intimate yet.
(S) Do you think this will be a test of our commitment to each other?
(H) Maybe. I don’t like it anymore than you do but……………….I want to continue being an aviator so I can contribute if things get rough in the future. In the course of a life time, this is but a blip on the screen. We can get by until I return.
(S) Sure we can. I understand that you need to do this; I just don’t like to be without you.
(H) I understand and feel the same way. I am sure you will be busy while I am gone.
They discussed things like tennis shoes, school clothes, violin lessons, and baby sitters. They decided that the girls should help decide what sitter or after-school center would be best.
(H) I installed a lock on the inside garage door that can only be opened from the outside to give us privacy. Would you like to join me in the jeep?
(S) Explain it to me when we get out there. I’ll follow you.
They went from the kitchen to the garage and Harm turned and locked the kitchen door from the outside. He explained that no one could enter the garage from the kitchen. Sarah understood and crawled into the back seat of the jeep with Harm right behind her. As they were removing their clothing he reminded her that she had to remain quite because sound would alert others. They enjoyed the back seat for the first time but it also brought back old memories for both. They had found a way to at least not be caught during the act. Harm already knew that Sarah’s perpetual smile had the children well informed of their activities. It really was not much of a secret anymore that he had the major “hots” for their mom.
Jerry acted the part of big brother for the remaining week before the twins started school. He then had slack time to see DC and meet up with new friends from the academy. Everyone decided on Mrs. Anderson as the sitter/overseer for the girls when Harm or Sarah was not home. It was fortunate that she was a retired music teacher and lived two houses down the street. After the girls were back to school on 20 August, the next important thing was taking Jerry back to the academy and Harm’s month at sea on the Henry.
1 September
Taking Jerry back to the academy was happier this time because everyone had heard a lot about what the life was like. Everyone helped get him settled before leaving. Many tears and hugs were given and everyone felt good about his future. The ride home was about homework for Monday and plans for the next photo shoot.
4 September
After very emotional goodbyes, Harm loaded his gear on the COD that was going to take him aboard the Henry. One last kiss to all of his girls was completed before he loaded so engines could be started. They all waved as the aircraft took off taking him away from them. The ride home was almost unbearable as all three girls were feeling the loss already. Harm unloaded all his gear quickly after getting to his state room and made an e-mail back too all of them. He gave them his e-mail address and told everyone he wanted to hear from them often. Later after he knew the twins were in bed, he sent an e-mail to the separate e-mail identity under password he had set up just for Sarah. He could express his feeling openly there since the girls could not unlock it.
The first few days were the worst for everyone but things started to improve after the first weekend because they were super busy with a photo shoot for Christmas. Sarah was busy but started to find a change at the office. After the first few days the word got out that Harm was not there and she started receiving phone calls from interested men. She could not believe what was happening but kept records of everyone showing an interest in her. She received open invitations for everything from dinner to raw sex. She told Harm of the change and that she was keeping a list of who was showing advances. He was not pleased but had total trust in her. The month drug by slowly as both needed more than e-mails to keep them happy.
Harm completed all of his qualifications successfully on Wednesday of the third week and it took a load off him leaving only a couple minor cases to finish. The resident JAG returned on Sunday 30 September and he had his bags packed for the COD the next morning. He arrived back in DC at 17:30 to the waiting arms of 3 lovely ladies. They spent the night celebrating and getting reacquainted. Harm and Sarah spent time in the garage after the girls went to bed.
Tuesday
2 October
Harm and Sarah entered the office together and was met by Tiner and they were directed to the Admiral’s office right away. A murder had happened in Norfolk and he wanted them there today. Sarah was dismissed to pack up and Harm was asked to remain. Harm gave him a complete debrief on the activities at the Henry and of the order he had found the JAG office aboard ship. He was told to file his report with Tiner before he left.
(Adm) I have been told that Major MacKenzie has received some rather disturbing advances from male military personnel since you have been gone. Does she have everything under control?
(H) Yes sir. I don’t know if I should be mad or proud that others find her desirable. I assure you that I will take care of anything she can not sir.
(Adm) Keep me apprised. Some of these individuals may need some counseling and intervention from me if you get my drift.
(H) I do sir, and thank you.
(Adm) Are things progressing well between you and the Major?
(H) Yes sir. I now have the family I have needed to feel complete.
(Adm) Wedding in the future?
(H) You will be the second to know, sir.
(Adm) Good enough for me. Good luck with everything.
Harm exited the Admiral’s office and found that Sarah had already contacted Mrs. Anderson about the girls and she was going to look after them until they returned.
They checked out the duty car and went by the school to tell Laura and Vicky. After all explanations were given they hugged and kissed them and left for the house. They picked up the uniforms and other clothing they would need and started the 4 hour drive. They checked into two adjoining rooms at the Holiday Inn and unloaded their bags before driving on base. They checked in with the Provost Marshall at the main gate and picked up a copy of the official report he had filed. They stopped by the office of the base commander to offer their cards and announce their arrival. He filled them in on all the known facts before directing them to the NCIS office. They were told that no witness could be found and they were at a dead end already. They asked a lot of questions before packing it up for the day.
They retuned to the Holiday Inn and quickly met on the bed in Harm’s room. They took two fantastic hours to take care of needs and catch up on Harm being away. They discussed who seemed to have the “hots” for Sarah while he was gone and had been stupid enough to “come on” to her. Sarah was upset wondering why they would think she would be interested in sex with them when Harm was gone. She wondered if they thought she was giving off some signal that she was not happy with him. She was concerned as to why it had happened. Harm made her promise to let him take care of anyone that seemed to be a threat to her. She knew he could and would and quickly agreed.
They ordered room service and opened up every thing about the case. They each separately read every report and fact sheet. They compared what they had read and started playing the devils advocate. They asked questions of each other and things started to take shape. They made a list of all the usual suspects and who should have been a witness even though no one claimed to see anything. They spent the rest of the evening and night in the satisfaction of each other and slept naked together until 08:00 the next morning. After getting up they had a nice breakfast and headed for the base to find the people at their duty stations.
They met with the person in charge of the duty area of the dead man and had him help fill in the names of the usual suspects to be questioned. They started by calling two of these individuals in at the same time and each interviewed a different one and then exchanged them so the other one could interview that person a second time. They broke for lunch at 11:45 after seeing 8 different sailors. They compared notes as they ate and noticed some inconsistencies with two of the people. They made a call to the NCIS office and asked that the sleeping quarters for those two sailors be searched for anything strange or abnormal.
They started again for the afternoon and finished the other 14 sailors before 17:00. They met in the office provided and went over the differences in the stories they had heard. Harm called NCIS a second time and asked that 6 more sailors be added to the search list. Harm left his cell phone number with the agent and told him they were leaving the base for the day.
They returned to the motel and played the taped interviews Sarah had completed followed by Harm’s interview of the same person. They extracted the names of girlfriends, lovers, friends, and workmates for each individual. They compared and three of the people talked of the same girlfriends and lovers. They tried and finally created a logical trail of what these 3 people had so much in common. They verified that all three were on the search list. Sarah made a quick call asking that all three be made available the following morning at 10:00 hrs.
They finally changed out of uniform and made their way to Denny’s for breakfast food in the evening. Their main conversation was about “their family.”
(H) Honey, I made a decision while aboard ship that I don’t want to do that anymore. Being away from you and the girls is not acceptable. Even though I was busy with important things and responsibilities, I felt like I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I needed to be home with you and the girls instead of aboard ship. Like you said before, I felt alone in a crowd. I have it bad for you and the girls.
(S) I felt so alone also. I don’t think “having it bad for me and the girls” is such a bad thing from where I stand. I needed to find how serious your feelings were and I believe I got my answer. I love you, Harm.
(H) Yes. I do love you Sarah. Up until the trip, I hadn’t realized how much of what I am is actually filled by you. Before knowing you, I never knew of the holes I had in my self. After you came, you filled all of them with yourself and the girls. I am now more than I was before because of what you add to my life. I don’t want to ever be only part of a person like I was. I am looking forward to marrying you and sharing the time we have left together.
(S) Are you proposing to me right now?
(H) Our agreement was to promise to tell each other when we were totally ready to be bound to each other for eternity so we could get married. I am now ready to join you forever in marriage. The important thing is that we both need to get to this point before it happens.
(S) Thank you for saying that. I need some time. I am going to spend time and talk with Jerry, Laura and Victoria about what this will mean for each of them before we talk about this again. You know I love you and I want to make sure before joining you.
(H) I knew that would be your answer because of whom and what you are. Take all the time you need but don’t forget that I love you.
(S) That will never happen. My past relationships have all been dismal failures but ours has been one born out of mutual respect, trust, and love for each other. It almost feels like it has been too easy but we have been on the same page since the day you came home to meet my tribe. I noticed a change in you immediately and things have just been getting better by the day. Even if it takes some time, I fully intend to be “your lady” for eternity.
(H) If you are done, I believe we need to move this to a more private location where I can convince you of how much I love you.
(S) I’m right behind you. Lead on.
Spending the night together without restriction felt so totally natural, right, and fulfilling. They filled the night with memories to last into the future.
The next morning they were ready when the first sailor was brought in for his interview. They teamed up and both conducted the interview. The sailor’s story seemed to have holes in it and Sarah played “bad cop” and went for the jugular. Harm asked many quick questions and Sarah was on the sailor’s case big-time. The tale started to unravel and a lover’s triangle came into focus. They drew everything they thought they could get before turning him over to the guards to be retained. The second sailor was interviewed and they used information given by the first to destroy his story. He broke down and more of the story was revealed. The third sailor was made aware of what had been said by the first two and the whole story was quickly found. Harm called agent Adams at NCIS and a warrant was requested from local authorities for the arrest of Sally Van Horn, the object of the love triangle, for the murder of Seaman Thompson.
Harm and Sarah returned to their assigned office and recorded a fully detailed account of what had been found. They used their laptop to file their report and took everything to the base commander (Convening Authority) and left copies of all their recorded tapes for the record. They called into JAG and gave a full account to the Admiral and sent him a copy of their report. They left the base and made it back to the motel. They knew they were looking at a 4 hour trip back to DC and decided they wanted to be home by 20:00 and decided they still had 5 hours before they had to leave Norfolk. They found their bathing suits and spent the first 1 ½ hours in the heated pool and the last 3 ½ hours making love, showering, and getting ready to leave. They had spent many hours being together and it was so good to be a couple again.
They got back in time to pick up the girls, check homework, have a late snack, and make sure everything was OK. They tucked the girls in and went to their own beds after a goodnight kiss.
Friday morning
5 October
Harm and Sarah gave their debrief to the Admiral and was given the rest of the day off to start the weekend off early. It was welcomed because tomorrow was a combined photo shoot of all 4 as a family. They spent the day together until the girls got off school and everyone went to an early movie that had been so hard to get into. The movie was good and everyone enjoyed it. They stopped at beltway and had their meal and let everyone talk about what they expected to happen the next day. Sarah suggested everyone go in red shirt and jeans as a family fashion statement and everyone got a big kick out of it. The night was rather quiet for Harm as Sarah accompanied the girls to their room and closed the door behind her. The meeting was finally over at 22:30 when Sarah came back down stairs and went into the master suite before returning. She didn’t volunteer any information but Harm knew that their relationship had been the subject of discussion.
(H) Everything OK?
(S) Yes, more than OK. Harm, I’m ready to join you now. We are ready for you. Goodnight Harm.
Harm watched her as she moved up the stairs while maintaining eye contact with him. Before she disappeared, he mouthed “I love you” and “Marry me” and she quietly returned the “I love you” and said “Yes.” He left the kitchen table and returned to the master suite. He turned the covers down and found the note she had placed there. He read the comments from her heart that she had put on paper and he became warm all over. Heartfelt words from her reduced him down to who he really was. He remembered comments made by their pastor a few weeks ago “the richest people on earth are not those that have the most but those that need the least.” He smiled knowing now that the love of Sarah and her children was what he needed the most and understood that things thought to be all important but a few months ago were not even thought of or worried about today. His final thoughts before sleep were “I am the luckiest and richest man alive.”
