Richest Man Alive …… Chapter 2

(From Chapter 1)

(M) We are leaving for Baltimore right after I get off work.

(H) Mac, do you think you and I could work it out where we could deal with scratching the itch together?

(M) I don’t know. Are you a Homo?

(H) No. Do I have to be? I’m about as straight as you, I guess. It would be a lot better than what I have been doing lately and I think we might even enjoy it.

(M) I’ll think it over. We might be able to work something out. If you need me for anything, call me on my cell phone or at home on Sunday because I will be back Sunday afternoon.

(H) Why don’t you take Jerry over to the academy on your way home and let him walk around? How about you plant a seed and we can both watch it grow? Call me when you get home because I want to know how it went.

(M) I will. Thanks for caring about us.

CHAPTER 2:

Sunday
25 February, 1997

The weekend went as planned and Mac called Harm at 18:00 on Sunday. She was actually surprised that Jerry had been very interested in everything about the academy. They spent about one hour more there than Mac had planned. Harm listened and was excited about what this might mean to Jerry.

(M) Harm, I need to admit something to you that is a conundrum for me. If Jerry would be accepted into the academy, I would loose my built-in baby sitter and would need a sitter daily to take the girls to school and take care of them after. It would be more expensive for me than the tuition I currently pay for him at Georgetown. I want him to have every chance but I need to be honest and realistic about things.

(H) What do you figure the difference would be?

(M) About $200 a month.

(H) Aren’t you up for Lt. Colonel?

(M) Yes. But…………………that might be just a dream. I had an affair with a senior officer some years ago that may come back to haunt me if they start looking.

(H) Any unresolved feelings about the guy?

(M) No. It was stupid of me and I just chalked it up to youthful indiscretion.

(H) Are you using the whole allotment I am making?

(M) About $100 a month.

(H) I’ll make up the difference if he decides to apply. I think he deserves to have every chance he can get and..…….I believe deep down, you feel the same.

(M) So, you want us to do everything possible to give him a shot at the academy?

(H) Yes. Please tell me how the real Sarah MacKenzie feels, the only mom that Jerry remembers has to want the best for someone she holds so dear.

(M) OK. Let’s do it. Let’s go the whole 9 yards to get him in if you are going to stick by me……….

(H) We will. Why don’t you set up an appointment with A.J. so he can meet Jerry? We will want him on his side.

Are you finished for the night? I am bushed so we need to talk tomorrow if that is OK? Thanks for calling Mac.

Harm rolled over and hung up the phone knowing that some changes were coming for Sarah and her family. He had a sick feeling in his gut knowing that she had spent a couple nights being screwed by an old queer friend. He found himself very jealous and irritated about every bit of it.

5 March

A week later, Mac talked at length with Admiral Chegwidden about the possibility of Jerry being accepted into the academy and enlisted his aid in the endeavor. The Admiral set up a tentative meeting with Jerry for Tuesday March 18 and asked that Harm and Mac also attend. He also made calls and requested his old friend Capt. James, who was now an administrator at the academy, to attend.

18 March

The meeting day finally arrived and Jerry accompanied Mac into work and waited in her office until the assigned time. Harm, Mac, Jerry, and Capt. James all entered the Admiral’s office at the same time and took seats.

AJ spoke briefly on the purpose of the meeting and asked many questions of Jerry as he continued to speak. Jerry got over his stage fright and became more comfortable before AJ finally asked him to explain why he wanted to attend the academy. Jerry spoke slowly and in a confident tone and explained why he believed he could become a good marine and serve his country after receiving his degree.

AJ asked Capt James to explain everything that needed to be done to make sure Jerry’s application to the academy would be found to be in proper order to be accepted. Capt. James handed out copies of the correct forms for everyone to read and almost went thru it line for line. AJ asked questions and slowly filled out the correct forms all to be signed by Jerry. Harm, Mac, and AJ all included their letters of recommendation along with the properly filled out forms to be hand carried back to the academy by Capt. James. What might have taken months going thru all the political channels was accomplished in a morning among friends.

After the meeting ended, AJ made a fuss about Jerry which made his “mom” very proud of him. Harm found himself also feeling like a father to this young man.

AJ asked Jerry and Mac if he could become Jerry’s mentor for the time until he was accepted. Jerry and Mac both agreed that Jerry would spend every Saturday afternoon with AJ being taught some of the things he would need to know to excel in the Navy/Marine Corps. Now the wait would start.

Monday
9 April, 1997

In early April Mac was told she would do a Jagman investigation at the Recruit Depot in San Diego and then do her range time and qualify in small arms at Camp Matthews.

(M) Hey partner, I need to ask a big favor of you. I leave Wednesday afternoon and fly to San Diego for 7 days on a Jagman investigation. Would you mind looking out for my tribe? I’ll be back the following Tuesday evening.

(H) No problem. I think we can work it out. Why 7 days?

(M) I will do the investigation on Thursday and Friday and then I have to wait till Monday and Tuesday to do my small arms qualifications at Camp Matthews. That should be over Tuesday morning and then I will head back.

(H) Tell me how you want me to do this.

(M) Stay at my place for the time. I will leave everyone a list of what needs to be done and all you need to do is be there to make sure they do it. You can sleep in my bed, I will have a casserole in the freezer for everyday, and Jerry will make sure everyone has dinner and everybody helps clean up.

(H) I can do that. But…………………...if you want me to sleep in your bed, I think you should sleep in mine.

(M) Harm, I haven’t made up my mind yet about you scratching my itch and the nose-to-nose, toes-to-toes thing…………… yet.

(H) That is not what I meant but it is good that you haven’t forgotten about my proposal. What I meant was that it has been too long since I have visited my mom and dad and they live very close to where you will be. Would you mind going by to see them for me? I am sure they will let you stay in my old room. It is important to me.

(M) No promises but I will call them Friday when I get done. OK?

(H) Thank you. Take your swim suit along because even if the water is cold, you can still get a great tan. I’ll print out a map and directions for you so you can find the house.

11 April

Wednesday came and Harm went to Mac’s home after he took her to the airport. It was after 18:00 before he arrived and he found everyone waiting on him so they could have dinner. Laura asked him what he wanted to drink and he told her. She brought it over and they all sat for grace. It was Victoria’s turn so she recited the prayer the family used and all said amen. Jerry stood and took each plate and dipped up the casserole for everyone. Everyone started eating and Harm noticed that everyone was watching him between bites.

(H) Is everyone waiting on me for something?

(J) Yes, I guess. Mom always plays 20 questions with us at this time.

(H) OK. Tonight we will play 20 answers. Laura, please start by telling us the normal answers your mom would expect.

(L) Today I got a B in English and a C in P.E. Mrs. James is a good teacher but is boring beyond belief. Billy Parsons pulled my ponytail and left two lifesavers on my desk.

(V) Today I got a D in Math and an A in music. I wish I could play the violin. It is so cool. Laura left me one of the lifesavers that Billy gave her. I think I need new sneakers.

(J) I like Physics and Dynamics more every day. It is cool to find why things in this world always follow these cool laws of the universe. The jeep is making an odd sound.

(H) Thank you. Everyone gave me facts telling the good hi-lights of their day. Do you ever have a totally terrible day?

(J) Not really…….mom has taught us that every day gives us opportunities that we can either embrace or deny. We look forward to the results of those we embrace. Even bad results teach us lessons.

(H) Does your mother review these results with you?

(L) Yes. She gets pretty intense at times. She always wants us to keep our head in the game.

(V) Although she expects perfection, she tries to remember and make up for what happened in her earlier life. She tries so hard.

(H) Are there things about your mom you would change if you could?

(V) Happier.
(L) Yes.
(J) Yes.

(H) I don’t understand. What do you mean?

(J) I want her to smile and laugh more. She deserves more happiness.
(V) Yes.
(L) Yes.

(H) Do I…….………..do you all expect me to do something about it?

(J) I’ve known her for 12 years and she has never had a person on her mind like she has you. We hear about you every night at dinner.

(V) We want you to make mommy happy. You are nicer than Uncle Harry.

(L) Why don’t you ask her out on a date and wine and dine her and make her fall in love with you?

(V) and……………………….become our daddy.

(H) Your mother has a mind of her own and will make decisions like that. Does this mean I have your blessing to ask your mom out on a date?

(J) Yes.
(V) Yippee.
(L) So cool.

(H) You three are something else. Is all your homework done? I guess we need to get the place cleaned up. Victoria, please stay and talk to me about math. Everyone that wants blueberry waffles for breakfast needs to set their alarms 15 minutes earlier tomorrow morning.

After Laura and Jerry moved to do the dishes, Victoria tried to tell Harm why she was having problems with math.

Everyone finished the evening and got ready for bed and Harm’s cell rang. Harm and Mac talked for a time about things like her arrival and other things and Harm offered to let her talk to everyone else. She said since it was late, she asked him to pass everything along. They ended the call on a pleasant note.

Thursday Early Morning
02:55 Hrs

Harm woke up hearing sobbing outside his (her) bedroom. He was out the door in a flash finding Victoria seated on the floor in the hall crying. He spoke to her and sat down beside her. She was in his arms before he knew it crying her little heart out. He held her and rocked her back and forth. He listened and found she had never received a “D” before and was devastated. She told him she was having a hard time seeing the different numbers on the board. She just knew there was going to be hell to pay when mom got home. Harm held her and took his time and waited as sleep finally took over. He carried her back to her bedroom where Laura was awake waiting on her sister to return and feel better.

05:45 came early as Harm drug himself to the kitchen to make waffles, not just waffles but “Blueberry Waffles” the favorite of every person named Ragle in D.C. They all showed up in bathrobes with Jerry taking his with him to the bathroom as he prepared to shower and shave.

Harm watched as the finely choreographed morning movements took place knowing that every one of them would find a way to be in the Jeep just in time to make their way to school.

Harm entered JAG just knowing that more interesting stuff was going to be in store for him tonight. Those three were miles ahead of everyone around them.

Harm received a call from Mac at 17:00 as he was ending his day. He was enjoying all of this attention from her.

(M) Everything going OK?

(H) Victoria had some anxious moments in the middle of the night because she received a D in math and she knows you will be disappointed. I actually believe she is having eye problems and with your OK, I want to have both girls looked at by Dr. Peters at Bethesda. You need to fax me a form giving me permission to take them out of school and one giving me the authority to have them checked out. Also…………I think she just wanted a dad to listen to her.

(M) A “D” in math is not good, but…………….evidently you already dealt with it. Do you think she understood why she received the grade?

(H) She does. We talked about the problem and she understood where she made her mistakes. Laura will also help her by following along with the homework. You have great kids.

(M) I called your mom last night and told her I wanted to visit and she insisted I come Friday night and stay over Saturday. She sounds nice.

(H) Thank you for doing that. When will you be back?

(M) Tuesday night like I told you. Why?

(H) I miss my partner.

(M) She misses you too. I’ll fax the forms so you will have them in the morning. Thanks Harm, you are really good for me and my family.

I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Goodnight.

Harm stared at the phone for a minute wondering if everything the kids had said were true. Could he be the person making her life more enjoyable? He dismissed it quickly because he had no reason to believe she would want a guy like him. He could only hope that he would be that lucky some day.

Even though it was after 17:00 he called Dr. Peters on the off chance that he might still be there. The young petty officer at the desk asked him to wait and Dr. Peters picked up the line.

(Dr) Commander Peters.

(H) This is Lt. Commander Rabb and you helped me with my last sight screening. I have a favor to ask because my partner’s daughters are having eye problems and I thought of you. One has a problem distinguishing letters and numbers.

(Dr) I’ve got some room at 15:00 tomorrow if that will do.

(H) Any preparation they need to do?

(Dr) No sweets or sugar from now to then.

(H) Thank you doctor. We will be there at 15:00.

Harm made a special effort to get to Mac’s place a few minutes earlier to keep everyone from waiting on him to eat. They ate together and he told them of Mac’s call and Victoria was relieved to hear that her mom was not too upset. Harm told the girls of the sugar restrictions and told them he would pick them both up at school at 14:00. Harm and Jerry checked the twins homework later before everyone settled down for the night. Harm sat at Mac’s desk reviewing a case one last time before he was to present on Friday morning.

Laura wondered in about 21:30 and pulled up a chair. Harm stopped and gave her his attention.

(L) Is something bad wrong with Vicky?

(H) No I don’t think so. When was the last time you had your eyes checked?

(L) A couple years ago, I guess.

Harm realized that these two seemed to share everything and she was concerned for her sister and also herself. What happened to one usually happened to both. He could also see she felt left out.

(H) OK. I know that you didn’t say you were having problems but I wanted to make sure you were both all right. This doctor helped me and he is really good. I will pick you both up at 14:00 and we will go together.

You haven’t said anything about me being here, is it OK with you?

(L) Sure. I like it when you spend time with us. I think mom likes it to. You are as close to a dad as we have ever had.

(H) What about Uncle Harry?

(L) He’s a fruit cake. I don’t know what she sees in him other than the obvious.

(H) The obvious?

(L) He is queer and safe so she has sex with him.

(H) I don’t think she knows that you know about that. How long has this been going on?

(L) We have been going there every once in a while for 5 or so years and we finally figured it out. It’s always the same, they drop us off at Chuck E Cheese’s and when they come back a couple hours later, mom has a smile on her face. Nobody is supposed to know that he is queer and has a boyfriend.

(H) So you don’t like Uncle Harry?

(L) No. I like him. He is a very nice man who always makes sure we have Christmas even when mom can’t afford it and mom and he are old friends.

(H) How do you feel about your mom being with a homosexual?

(L) Yuk. We all believe you should do something about it.

(H) Well thanks but that is not something I can discuss with you. Will you be ready at 14:00?

(L) Yes ……..…..…………. dad.

Harm just looked at her with that small smile look as she got up, gave him a goodnight kiss and left. He settled back in the chair and called Mac’s cell.

(H) Hey, how is your night going?

(M) Ok. Any problems?

(H) Just normal things. The Timmons case is at 09:00 and I made the girls eye appointment for 15:00.

(M) I’ll get the fax to the office before I finish here. Thanks for everything.

(H) How about I take you on a movie date when you get back?

(M) A date date? What is this all about?

(H) I got my orders tonight. Let me see if I can remember the exact words…… “Why don’t you ask her out on a date and wine and dine her…and make her fall in love with you” and Vicky then added…..”and become our daddy.”

(M) Harm, I am so sorry they did that to you.

(H) I’m not. Your kids are worried about you and just want you to be happy. I’m glad they like me.

(M) You’re really not upset? I thought you might be.

(H) Why? To have your twins say my name and the word daddy in the same sentence is about as good as it gets.

(M) You constantly amaze me. What am I going to do with you, Mister Rabb?

(H) My offer is still on the table.

(M) Later. I will decide sometime soon but I am glad you are still interested.

(H) Sweet dreams Sarah.

(M) Same to you Harm.

Friday:
13 April, 1997

Mac filed her action report early Friday afternoon picked up her briefcase and made her way to the BOQ to shower and change. She looked over every piece of civilian clothing she had brought and decided what image she wanted to project to the mom and dad of her partner. She suddenly realized that pleasing Harm now mattered to her. She went with a pastel conservative blouse with grey slacks and packed her swim suit and enough other things for the weekend.

{Well, what he thinks does matter to me now. God, I want him to matter. I am surprised that I feel so lonely when he is out of my sight. Lonely in a crowd can only mean one thing. He really turns me on when he smiles at me. Sounds like I am getting it bad again but he isn’t just another guy. He is Harm, my partner, and in my thoughts all the time.}

She arrived a few minutes early and was greeted by Frank with hand shakes and then Trish with a big hug. They led her into the eat-in kitchen, poured her a cup of tea, and all sat down to talk over everything. Trish asked many questions about Harm and finally got around to asking questions about her and her family. Mac was as forthcoming as she felt comfortable with but gave them a good idea what her life was like with 3 children. After dinner everyone went out to the beach to walk and watch the sunset before calling it a night.

(T) Harm says you live by a schedule all the time, is that right?

(M) Yes. With 4 in the house, many things need to be done quickly to keep everything going.

(T) OK. Breakfast at 8 AM and you and I start our day together at 9 AM. It will be my treat. See you then. Goodnight Sarah.

(M) Goodnight Trish and thanks for letting me stay.

Mac returned to Harm’s old room and got ready for bed. She stood looking and finally focused on every single thing in the room. There were trophies and pictures of Harm engaged in so many activities. He looked so young but was even a hunk at that age. She looked over every picture until finding one where he was about 16, dirty, dressed in a green utilities uniform, with blood on his tee shirt, and carrying an automatic weapon. The other people around him were small and looked like gooks. She had to wonder what story went with the picture but vowed to find out some day.

Harm was surprised Friday morning to find full legal documents appointing him as the health care surrogate for her and each one in her family and a durable power of attorney giving him authority over her affairs.

Harm, Laura and Victoria were on time for the 15:00 appointment with Dr. Peters. He took Victoria back first since she had the original complaint. He performed many tests before she was returned and Laura was called in. After Laura was finished, everyone was called into his office for the results. He reported that Victoria was having a major allergic reaction and Laura was just starting the same. The doctor gave each a tube of special salve for their eyes, explained how to apply it and wrote scripts for both to see Dr. Jacobson who was an allergist. Harm asked many questions and the doctor told him he thought the reaction was to something they were using or applying to there face but he said he could not be sure until the allergy tests were completed.

Harm and the twins thanked the doctor and made their way back to the car. Harm started 20 questions with them and found Mac had recently insisted they start a nightly cleaning with a facial cleaner she had purchased. The twins had adopted the regimen as Mac had requested. Harm asked about brand names, color of bottle, etc and found them well informed. They made a direct line for the nearest drug store and Harm let them check out every type facial cleaner known to be hypoallergenic. They both decided on a product by Aveeno and he bought one for each. They made it home in time to start dinner before Jerry got off from school. Harm asked and Victoria led him to their bathroom and handed him the old bottle of cleaner. Harm took it in and put it in Mac’s trash can.

The rest of the night was busy as both girls and Jerry had homework and Harm had cases to read over. Mac called on the house phone and took turns talking to everyone except Harm, she saved him for last. When he finally got on the line, she asked questions and he told her what he had done about things.

Saturday
14 April

Her alarm went off at 07:00 which was later that she had slept in months. She stretched slowly and enjoyed being where Harm once slept. She dressed after a shower and made her way to the kitchen where Frank was reading the morning paper and Trish was making coffee. Mac asked questions about Frank’s job and he explained what he was currently working on. She found that Trish owned an art gallery downtown and assumed that was where they would spend the day. She liked art but was not involved because money was needed for tennis shoes and backpacks leaving little for paintings for the walls.

As 9 AM approached, she became nervous because everything was out of her control. Trish gathered her bag and gave Frank a kiss before escorting Mac out to the car. They drove for a few minutes before parking in front of a very large beautiful building. Trish got out, grabbed her bag, and waited for Mac to join her. They walked in the front door of the building and down a corridor which had paintings on both sides of a variety of subjects. Trish explained these to be paintings she had for sale and led Mac over to one she felt was special. She explained many facts about the painting before being interrupted.

(Tech) Mrs. Burnett, we are ready for your party now.

(T) Thank you. Mac, come along with me.

They were led into the first small room to change out of their clothes into robes that were provided and then escorted into the steam room filled with a very strong aroma. It was almost too much at first but as their pores opened up they found it soothing. The next stop was into the mud bathes. It was warm, disgusting, and squishy but served to draw on every open pore.

(M) I’ve heard of these places but never thought I would ever be up to my chin in mud. This must cost a fortune.

(T) They comp me a membership every year because I provide all the paintings. They hold 3 showings here every year for my new artists and to let visitors see their facilities. We work well together but I hardly ever use their services because I hardly ever have someone to enjoy it with. Today’s different. I am so happy you were able to come.

The entire day was one thing after another for the pampering of today’s woman. About half way thru while having a full body massage Trish popped the big question that had been on her mind since Mac arrived.

(T) Are you in love with my son and do you need answers from me?

(M) No, I am not in love with Harm but he is the best partner I have ever had.

(T) I thought you might be the one that needed to find what makes him tick and wanted to know how to win his heart.

(M) Since I believe you have something to tell me, let’s just suppose for this time that I am that person. What do I need to know?

(T) “I am proud of my son. Frank and I raised him to be true to himself and always a gentleman. We have taught him to always respect women and value them. At this stage in life, that is both good and bad.

Harm has always been good looking and has been constantly hit-on by the ladies ever since the age of 13 or 14. I have watched him be approached by girls half his age and women twice his age all in the same hour. He has learned many ways to handle and deal with it with finesse without causing hard feelings. He will try to avoid confrontations with these people at all costs even if others with him may become offended.

The woman that chooses to be his wife will need to develop a quiet communication with him so she can tell him when she feels it is inappropriate. He will quickly sidestep the offender if he thinks you are concerned.

Harm is looking for someone that has never forgotten she is a lady. We live in a world which believes in “equality of the sexes” and I believe your marine corps also teaches you things like that. When it comes to Harm, if you believe that, you lose. The sexes will never be equal and all I can say is “get over it.” You can give birth to babies and feed and nourish them from your own breast. There has never been a man in history that has been able to do that and Harm totally understands and appreciates the difference. It is all important that you always act like the lady that you are. Allow him the confidence to know you will always conduct yourself with honesty, integrity, and love for him.

Harm wants a woman that “knows her place.” I don’t believe any previous girlfriend ever understood what that meant. He believes his wife’s place should be right beside him, step by step, day by day, hour by hour, being there because she wants to, not because she must.

Harm is a very strong large person as he was even in his youth. Being bigger than most, we had to teach him to be more tolerant of others because we knew he could do major damage to someone if they provoked him beyond his limits. You will find he will always try to reason with people rather than fight. He learned early on not to sweat the “small stuff” and later found that most things in life were “small stuff.” He ran away when he was 15 to find his real father who was shot down over Viet Nam. By 16 he had learned, by necessity, to be a real killing machine. We could see the change in him when he returned because he now understood what death by his own hand was about.

You need to learn the limits of his tolerance beyond which most people don’t stand a chance. His wrath can be swift and deadly. Since his tolerance will exceed yours during times of disrespect or insults to you and your family, you will need to tell him when you are at your limit so he can deal with it quickly before hurting someone.

A second item while talking about that subject: …if you ever hit him in anger, you should expect to pick your butt up off the floor. I guarantee you he will always treat you like a lady until you forget that you are one. If you act like a man, he will damn sure treat you like a man.

If you become involved with Harm, you will find he will automatically assume the dominant role. If you have problems with that, you need to steer clear now before it even starts. He will assume that role in your bedroom also. I was lucky years ago to hear my Frank explaining the facts of life to Harm which gave me extra insight. Frank asked “Do you know how to keep a woman happy” and then replied “treat a lady like a whore and a whore like a lady.” Believe it or not, it makes a lot of sense.

It allows both of you to love each other and still be as lusty, needy, gaudy, smutty, and what ever else you want to be in your own bedroom. You can enjoy each other to the limit because only you two know what really goes on there. He will know you will wear the gold pasties with bright green tassels he found somewhere just because you know you will have fun with him. The really neat thing about it is that it gives you a score card to work with. If he ever starts treating you differently, you know there is trouble in your marriage requiring attention.

You can even be forward, forceful and aggressive in sex at times but never without asking his permission first. You will not damage his image of “lady like behavior” if he gives you permission to take the dominant role. It might take some practice but you will find how to approach him about it.

Remember, permission is always required to take on the role of dominance. You can be the Tough-as-Nails Marine yelling orders at everyone but not within his presence without you have first received permission from him. A wink, a smile, a head shake or something else might be what you two work out but permission, none the less. Otherwise he will see your behavior as manly, brash, and un-ladylike leading to problems. If you remember his increased tolerance level, he will think many times that quiet dialog is better than angry words from anyone, especially you.

If Harm is as well endowed as his father was, you will need to be the one responsible for birth control. Harm Senior hated condoms because they always seemed too small and tore or broke some of the time. Nothing was worse than enjoying ourselves and finding a torn condom when we were finished. I never asked him to use condoms after we were married. Given the choice between small or large, I happily chose to use birth control so I could enjoy the large.”

(M) So size does matter to you?

(T) Definitely. I think Harm’s Grandma Sarah put it best when she told me “all women who say size doesn’t matter, just never had it from a Rabb.” You will really like her.

I guess that about covers the secrets I think you need to know. Do you have questions for me?

Sarah asked some questions and answered other questions that Trish brought up. It turned out to be a good bonding session and both had fun as the final pedicure and manicures were finished.

They returned home to Frank waiting to take them out for a good steak. Frank took the long way home showing Mac some of the places Harm excelled at one thing or another.

Mac and Trish spent time on the beach Sunday morning talking and bonding. Their main subject was of course one tall sailor. Mac left after lunch knowing that she would always be welcome to return to visit Frank and Trish.
