Karen, Janlaw, and I thought you guys might want a capsule synopsis of events up to now since we're starting our third [and final] thread. So here it is...
A fanfic about one of the occurrences during Iraqi Freedom -a medal winner – did he die in combat or is he a murder victim? The idea for this story came from an article that I read in my local paper about how an Army soldier in Operation Iraqi Freedom was being investigated for a medal of honor posthumously for his actions. I wanted the JAG team to handle this kind of thing, but I knew I’d have to make an obvious change and a criminal angle to involve JAG and so the idea for this murder/mystery - action/adventure.
Paraguay happened, but I put a different twist on the tale. Takes place after Harm and Mac arrived back in the US. If you followed Season 9 there are events interspersed up to "Back in the Saddle", but I moved the space/time continuum so that Harm flew for the CIA Air Corps from early May to late June. The twist is, he came back to JAG in late June and he and Mac are working towards a permanent relationship, but as you know with Harm and Mac, nothing is easy.
The added fly in the ointment - Harm is still owned [body, if not soul] by the CIA and they can call him back - he still owes them for his Paraguay adventure.
The JAG Attorneys [Harm, Mac, Bud, and Sturgis] have been sent to Mirbullah, Iraq [north of Al Nasiriyah] to first investigate a friendly fire incident which turns out to be murder. But as the hearing (and later court martial) progresses, no one is who they appear to be and the real murderers want it kept that way. So much so that they have worked a deal with Iraqi insurgents and their Al Qaeda brethren to disrupt the JAG proceedings and thus the cohesion of a Marine Expeditionary Unit [the focus of the investigation] that has been in the front line too long.
The goal of all this subterfuge by the bad guys is to strike terror not only into the heart of JAG Headquarters in Washington but also into the MEU and destroy it.
In the aftermath of the attack on JAG Corps Headquarters, NCIS has become involved. As Gibbs and his joint NCIS/JAG[Gibbs' emphasis] team work to uncover the source of the attack, they run headlong into Harm's investigative team who was already there working on the murder that began
the original investigation.
As Gibbs' teams works to expose the bad guys, the JAGs continue with their court martial.
The end of the court martial has resulted in a major setback for the bad guys as one of their own 'confessed' to having killed the medal winner. Now Mac is getting ready to 'jump into the lions’ den' by pretending to be a rogue soldier and joining the bad guys.
The JAGs, with their unlikely NCIS allies, are closing in on who is really responsible. Question is, can they do it in time to head off another major terrorist attack?
