Thanks for all the warm welcomes.
This part is short - there will probably only be one or two parts more.
I wish everyone was as nice a critic as y'all. thanks much.
Part Two:
“What’s taking so long? I should be the one inside, not Rabb.” Mic Brumby continued to wear a path on the already faded waiting room carpet.
“I’m sure someone will be out soon to update us.” There were days when AJ wished he didn’t have to maintain a standard of military decorum, and this was one of them. For five years he’d watched Rabb and MacKenzie dance around their strong friendship. He’d have wagered big money the day the rough and tough Aussie walked out of McMurphy’s that he would never be seen again. He’d have staked his career that it would have been Rabb’s ring the Marine colonel would wear one day, not Brumby’s. What hadn’t ceased to amaze him though, was that he seemed to be the only one so inclined.
That Brumby hadn’t caught on yet to Rabb and MacKenzie’s unique connection to each other made AJ wonder how the hell Brumby ever made it past Lieutenant JG. And today more than any other time, he wanted to slap the man upside the head and open his eyes. No matter how many diamonds the woman wore, Brumby never stood a chance.
“Maybe we should check with the nurse again?” Harriet whispered quietly as Brumby turned about at the opposite end of the room, already steaming back in their direction. “I mean, maybe something has gone wrong?”
AJ was fairly certain nothing had gone wrong, he was hopeful that maybe finally something had gone right.
INSIDE ER
“So you’re telling me I’m engaged to Mic. I’m getting married in a few weeks. You and I have been nothing but friends, but you saw nothing wrong with kissing my socks off?”
“When you put it that way...”
“I don’t believe it.” Mac shook her head. “We’ve been through crazed poachers shooting at us, egomaniacal ambassadors wanting to take over African countries, Russian MIGs using us for target practice, a murdered ex husband, a murdered ex girlfriend, and a host of other crisis and life threatening experiences. You have never, never come close to kissing me the way you kissed me tonight. I know you Harmon Rabb, you wouldn’t make a move like that on another man’s fiancée. What gives?”
Harm let go of her hand, ran his fingers through his hair and sat back heavily in his chair. “I didn’t make a move on you.”
Mac cocked her head and raised a brow.
“It just happened.”
Mac wasn’t saying anything. The last time she’d tried to talk things out on the ferry in Sidney, she hadn’t gotten the answers she wanted. This time she was going to let him talk all by himself.
Harm stared at her blank expression. He wondered just how much of the porch conversation did she remember? They’d rehashed just about every near miss in their relationship. He’d practically confessed he was in love with her. What the hell was he supposed to say now? “You seemed content to marry Brumby. I didn’t want to stand in the way. It was just kissing the bride good luck.”
“Good luck?” Okay so maybe she had to say a little something.
Harm nodded.
“I’m not buying whatever you’re selling. I want the truth.”
“That is the truth.” At least what he’d intended.
“Harm.” Mac held her hand out until he grabbed hold of it again. “Come here a minute.”
He leaned forward again, elbows resting on her bedside.
“No, I mean closer.” Mac shifted to her left and patted the empty space beside her.
“Mac.”
“Don’t Mac me. Sit up here a minute.”
Harm blew out a deep breath and hitched one hip up onto the bed. Before he could shift his weight and settle in, Mac tugged on the one hand she held and pulled him into her. There hadn’t been time to think, to regroup. In a matter of seconds Mac’s arms were around him and her soft lips were brushing against his.
He wanted to pull back, to be the gentleman he hadn’t been earlier tonight. She was confused, and engaged. But logic had no more chance of succeeding now than it had on the porch. Her lips drew him in like a magnet to true north. Every nerve was humming. He wanted this kiss, and so much more.
Every sensation Mac had felt on the porch came rushing back. Good luck her ass. No man kissed a woman with this much passion to wish them luck. She wanted to melt into him. To be closer, so much closer. Her insides were sizzling with desire and the man had barely touched her. His fingers were resting on her arms, more for balance than tenderness and yet, his touch was like fuel on a fire.
She ran her fingers up his neck and through his hair. The soft moan that came from somewhere deep inside him raised the heat level another notch. God how she wanted this man. Shifting, she was practically sitting in his lap. Harm let out another soft groan of pleasure and she was lost. His hand slid passed the opening of her gown and ran up and down the bare flesh of her back.
The fires inside her were escalating at a frantic pace. “Harm,” she mumbled against his mouth, “Take me home.”
Take her home. Oh God he wanted to take her here and now more than he’d ever wanted anything in his life. Not even as a horny teenager had he wanted a woman this badly. But he’d never been in love before. “Mac,” he whispered. What? What was he going to say? Not now. Not yet. They can’t. No. The time for being chivalrous and fearful was gone. He’d come within days of losing the woman in his arms and he wasn’t going to let that happen again.
She may not remember being engaged to Brumby but he remembered every torturous moment.
“I love you,” he murmured then slid his lips over hers. One more taste. The heat burning inside him was almost unbearable, but he couldn’t stop. Didn’t want to stop. Not even the sound of the curtain sliding open was enough to break the pull of passion apart. Doctor’s knew the birds and the bees as well as anyone. Just one last...
“What the hell are you doing to my fiancée!”
