Making the beginning loop larger won't do it. It depends on the amount of stitches you end up with. You could possible add a couple of stitches along the way. If the pattern has 99 stitches on the last row, then possibly adding another stitch per row on just a few of the rows then that might help. I think, however, the best thing is to use a hook 1 or 2 sizes larger than the pattern calls for.
