Sure, a big fat external comes down the pipe sometimes and it's usually fraud, and my company DOES want us to bust those guys. But for the most part, the impulsive cheapskates making off with 15 dollar items are best left ignored.

We learned this economic lesson the hard way. One of our agents saw a guy grab and run a set of golf clubs, value was 3000 dollars. A chase ensued, and the perp threw the clubs into the open passenger window of his car and peeled into traffic, causing a 4 car pile up..the clubs went everywhere and the perp went to the ER. Worse, the people who hit the perp and were in the pile up sued us to kingdom come and back then we didn't carry liability insurance (lesson learned!)..we ended up paying out close to 150,000 dollars when the dust settled.

I got in trouble a few years ago for going out after a 10 dollar theft and getting punched in the face. Nothing serious, but I had to go to the clinic on workers comp and it cost 200 bucks for a 10 dollar theft.

Wow..and to think when I started ALL we did were externals and it didn't matter how little it cost..those days are gone.
