I am not new to LP, but have been at it for about 6 years now. When I started it was with an agency, and we would go to a variety of different retailers..some had cams, some didn't, but it was all about busting shoplifters and we were authorized to "do what we could" to catch them. This meant chases and some real serious fights.

These days I mostly do audits, safety and inventory management as an LP. I am encouraged to burn 95% of the shoplifters for no other reason than cost effectiveness. We are supposed to try an apprehend the grab n runners and the fraudsters, but even then we are not allowed to go more than 20ft from the door...I like it this way, but I am glad that I am not new..I am glad that I had 3 solid years of hardcore, no cam, shoplift LP because it taught me how to detect them and how to deal with them. If I were new and starting out in the current environment, I would probably catch nothing at all. Indeed, we have newer, younger people in the company who have been with us for over 2 years and never busted a shoplifter in their life. The company doesn't care so long as shrink goes down every quarter.

Newbies are a different breed...even not so newbies who have made busts but have depended on CCTV. There are very few classic floorwalkers left.
