The charcoal stag watched her pick up another trot. She moved fluidly and he liked what he saw, but she was perhaps too aloof to ever make a good lead mare. A lead mare was steadfast, dependable, and constantly alert, focused on the task presented to her. In this case it was finding a suitable home. The stallion raised his head, demanding a moment of the mare’s attention as he spoke. “My mares must earn their rank. But for you I would make an acceptation, and offer you the position of ‘gamma’. This is a worthy title, a steal for a newcomer like yourself. And there is an endless future in which you could increase your standing in the herd’s hierarchy if you did so desire. But to join me or not, the choice is yours.”
