Anesthesiologists are highly trained specialists on surgical teams. They watch your vitals very closely. You usually meet them before you go in the OR and they will explain what happens. Anesthesia is usually a combination of a 'gas' and IV drip.

Truth is, there is probably more risk for getting hit by space debris than not coming out of anesthesia.
