Friday morning
December 26, 2003
Mac's apartment
Georgetown, Washington D.C.

“Well I had my ways, they were all in vain. But she waited patiently. It was all the same, all my pride and shame, and she put me on my feet.” – Parachute, She is Love

Mac awoke early the next morning, languidly enjoying being back in her own bed once again after so many months away.

Her companion made it all the sweeter.

She studied him. Harm was lying on his stomach, his face turned to her, peaceful in sleep. She took notice of his long lashes. She hoped her children inherited them.

---- Their children. ----

Mac still couldn’t believe how much her life had changed in a day and a half.

She stared at her left hand in the gray early light of morning peering into her bedroom, reminding herself this was finally real. They were finally together after so many years of wrong turns and bad decisions.

For the first time since he had placed it on her finger, Mac slipped the ring off, looking for the inscription she knew by heart from the transcript of his testimony.

There it was: “To my best friend, for eternity.” The words were etched precisely into the platinum, the letters equidistance from the rounded edges of the band. The ring was the most incredible piece of jewelry she’d ever touched. And from Tiffany’s, she thought. It must have cost him a fortune.

“Corny, huh?” His voice startled her. He had just awoken and it was still rough with sleep.

Pleased he was up, she slipped the ring back on her left hand and turned toward him, running the same hand over the side of his face. His eyes were still sleepy. “Nah. Sweet. Sentimental. Perfect. But not corny.”

He flipped onto his back and pulled her into his arms. “The Admiral told me it was, and I quote, ‘pretty damn romantic’.”

Mac laughed. “Oh my God. Are you serious? I can’t believe he said anything to you about it. What did you say?”

“Nothing. He said it as I was walking out of his office, I just kept walking. This was a few days ago. When he told me he offered you the Naples position for the second time and you were considering it.”

She ran her hand over the hard planes of his chest. “A regular Yenta.”

Harm glanced down at her. “We’re going to have a lot of explaining to do, aren’t we?”

She shrugged. “Maybe not. We’ve been the center of the JAG rumor mill for years. We’ve basically validated every piece of office gossip now. What’s there left to talk about?”

He smiled down at her. “I hope you’re right, Colonel.”

Her hand slipped down to caress his smooth abdomen.. “When do you have to be back at work?”

“I took a lot of leave when I was planning to head to California. Not until January 7th. You?”

“I’ve got time too. Admiral was generous with it. I go back January 9th.”

“Reporting to duty in Washington?” He smiled even broader at that.

She ducked her head and put her lips around one of his nipples. “Yes, reporting to duty back in Washington,” she confirmed.

“You keep that up and we’re not leaving this bed anytime soon.”

She laughed. “We should go for a run or something. I can’t remember the last time I spent this much time in bed.”

“Well, I’m flattered, Colonel.”

Mac smacked him playfully before getting out of bed. She aware he was watching her every step as she moved to find her navy silk robe that Harm had discarded quickly last night on her floor. She put it on slowly, enjoying his attention.

“Hey, is that the same robe you threw at me that one night you and Harriet went out to dinner?”

“Uh huh. I have a matching pair of pajamas.”

“I know. I remember.”

She moved to sit on the edge of her bed, admiring the view of him ensconced in her sheets – finally. It was hard to forget the moment they had shared on this bed a few months ago. “Can I ask you a question about that night?”

Harm sat up and leaned against her headboard. “You want to know if I was going to kiss you?”

She nodded, surprised he remembered so quickly.

“I was. One of my biggest regrets.”

Mac tilted her head in curiosity. “What stopped you?”

“We hadn’t had a conversation about our relationship in years. It seemed presumptuous. I had no idea what you wanted.”

“But we were spending all of this time together. Neither of us was involved with anyone else. I wanted you. You knew that.”

“There always seemed to be something in the way the last couple of years, distractions that kept us from finding the right time to talk about us – horrendous travel schedules, opposing each other in Court every other day, Bud getting hurt. At the time, I didn’t want to risk everything on an impulse. But, in retrospect, yes, I wish I had kissed you.”

She nodded, glancing out the window. “I didn’t mean to bring up the past.”

“I don’t mind it if you do, Mac. Let’s just promise each other one thing. From now on, honesty no matter what.”

“Deal.” She nodded her agreement and then smiled back at him. “You missed out on what would have been one hell of a night, sailor.”

He returned her smile broadly. “Nah, I didn’t. Just took me a few more months to get it. Worth the wait, Mackenzie.”

Mac sighed, hesitating to bring this up now, but it was weighing on her mind. “I hate to mention this, Harm, but I have to go back to Naples for a few days to pack up my apartment and close out at the Transatlantic office before heading back to JAG in a couple weeks.”

“You want company,” he asked.

“Seriously?” She was thrilled at his offer, elated they wouldn’t be parting ways anytime soon.

Harm shrugged. “Yeah, if that’s okay. I’ve got the leave days.”

“I would love it.” Mac crawled across the bed over to him.

“How much time do you need in Naples?”

“Not much. Probably just a day to tie up loose ends. I didn’t bring too much stuff. Few boxes of personal belongings I need to have shipped home. Need a couple hours at the office to sign off on year-end fit reps and close out paperwork for a couple cases. We can take an extra couple days to sightsee or just relax if you’re okay with that.”

He played with the silk of the sleeve of her robe. “Well, I was thinking. Frank has a villa in Florence. I thought maybe we could spend a couple days up there. Only if you want.”

She was taken aback by his suggestion. She now knew it would take time to adjust to him being this intimate, this romantic, after years of knowing him mostly as a friend and sometimes adversary. “I love Florence. That sounds amazing, Harm. I had no idea your parents had a place there.”

“I’ve never been to the house, but my Mother raves about it. It should be empty right now.”

“Since I didn’t get you a Christmas present, let me buy your flight.”

He looked sheepish. “I uh, have a ticket I didn’t use actually.”

She shook her head, not understanding. “You have an unused plane ticket to Italy? What for?”

“I booked it right after the Admiral told me he offered you the Transatlantic command position again permanently. Thought you should have all of the facts before you made your decision.”

“Oh, Harm.” Her heart melted all over again at his shy eyes.

“I was driving out to National on Monday night when I got a call from Landers. They needed me to fly CAP so I turned around and headed to Andrews. Obviously didn’t make my flight.”

“God, we’re such a mess.”

He pulled her to sit on his lap. “You have to admit, would have been kind of romantic though. You in San Diego, me in Naples – looking for each other.”

Her head tilted to the side. “What, you mean spending Christmas on opposite sides of the world? Star crossed lovers? That sounds awful.”

“Not star crossed anymore, Mac. You believe in fate?”

“I didn’t before last night, but nothing stays the same,” she said before he leaned forward and kissed her.

Once again his hands went to her waist, loosening the silk robe’s loose knot. One of his hands slipped in, massaging her breast. It felt incredible.

She braced her hands against his broad shoulders. “What were you saying again last night about having fantasies involving my bed?”

“So many, Mac.” His breath was hot on her neck.

“Tell me one,” she whispered into his ear, her teeth grazing the soft skin of his lobe.

Harm had been right – they wouldn’t leave the bed for another couple of hours. Neither minded.
