Chapter 2

If you have a problem with adult content don't read.

The characters aren't mine, mistakes are...

We have barely left D.C when I fall asleep. Waking up two hours later I feel guilty, I see Harm smiling at me, and then I feel self-conscious.

“What?” I ask as I rub my eyes and try not to blush.

“Sleep well?” He teases me.

“Sorry, I guess I was tired.” I smile sweetly and feel giddy and light, something I haven't been feeling in a long time. I've been tense and stressed ever since I took a seat on the plane that took Clay and myself to Paraguay. I regret agreeing to go on the mission, it's irrational, but it's how I feel.

“What did Clay say about your little weekend trip?” Harm asks me this in a tense way.

“This might come as a shock to you Harm, but I don't tell Clayton Webb my weekend plans.” I decide to say this in a teasing way, ignoring his jealousy.

“I shouldn't make assumptions like that.” He says with a sweet smile as he gives me a clever look.

“No you really shouldn't. All you have to do is ask. I won't lie to you. You should know that by now.” I keep my tone light and teasing, hoping that he'll follow my lead. I don't want to mess up the weekend with an argument.

“Oh, you're still a mystery to me, Mac. Even after eight years.” Thankfully, he laughs as he says it, keeping the tone light and teasing. I'm happy and I give him a full blown smile.

When we reach his grandmother's farm, we are laughing about a story Harm was telling me about Jack Keeter and Harm in their days at the Naval Academy. I have missed this side of Harm. Ever since Lt. Singer's death and Harm's arrest things have been weird between us, but now he's back to being my partner and best friend. This is the way it's supposed to be.

“How are you doing after the Singer mess?” I ask. “I still feel guilty about not being there for you.”

“You were afraid you'd make it worse by contacting me. Besides, you couldn't go against the Admiral's orders. I understand.” He sounds matter of fact and I get the sense that he's trying to bury the memory of that time somewhere among his other demons.

“I never thought you did it.” I assure him and it's true. “I was disappointed that you didn't confide in me.”

“I made a mistake.” He admits this without hesitation. “I royally screwed up and I paid my price for it. But it ended well. I'm not in prison at least.” He chuckles by his last statement and I have to smile by the way he's looking at me.

“What?”

“Lucky for you I wasn't in prison, huh?” He's teasing me now, but I don't think it's funny. He's insinuating that if he hadn't come after me I would be dead, and I don't appreciate the cocky way he’s behaving.

“Stop being an ass, Harm.” I turn away from him and focus on the landscape we're passing. I can see horses grassing and suddenly I miss Chloe and the rides we go on when I visit her. It's been six months since I last saw her. She's growing up and is busy with school and boys. I feel old.

“I'm sorry, Mac. I guess I'm still feeling a little resentful about your relationship with Webb.” He admits this in a tense way, talking through greeted teeth.

“I never slept with Clayton Webb. We got close because of the situation, but I'm not in love with him. You were making assumptions Harm, as you always do.” I tell him this calmly. He knows it and I know it, he was being a jealous jerk.

“Why are you always like that when it comes to me and other men?” I decide to be direct, feeling sick of our dance.

“None of them were good enough for you.” He says as he stops the car in front of a sweet little farmhouse. It looks like the farm is very well maintained, and I can see horses grassing by the barn. Maybe I'll get to ride this weekend.

“Because they aren't you?” I ask that as we both open the car doors. A woman is approaching the car. She's about eighty, slim, tall and surprisingly elegant as she with determination walks from the house and meets us by the car.

“There's my boy.” Harm's grandma is a beauty; even though she's old it's still there. I can see Harm in her, the smile and the eyes are the same. Sarah hugs Harm close and surprisingly Harm hugs her back, kiss her cheek, and tell her that he has missed her. It's rare to see him like this, openly sharing his feelings about another human being.

“Grandma, you've met Mac before.” Harm say this as he releases his grandmother. Again, he surprises me by putting his arm around my shoulders.

“It's nice to see you again, ma'am.” I say this politely.

“None of that, it's grandma or Sarah.” She pulls me in for a hug. “Finally Harm brings you here. Do you prefer Mac or Sarah?”

“I answer to both.” I say with a sweet smile.

“Then it's Sarah, and you will call me grandma so we won't be confused.” I'm glad grandma is such a light welcoming person, because I was a little nervous about coming here. Now I feel relaxed and safe as I look around the farm.

“Are the horses yours?” I ask as I walk over to the fence and study them. The three horses look well taken care of, I can see that one of them is just a foal and it's looking at me with curiosity.

“They are. That's old Wally.” Grandma points. “He's the only one I ride these days. The mare I adopted after she was rescued from her owner. She's nervous, but she's finally feeling safe here now. And that's her baby. I decided she should have a foal, because she's quite good looking. And it looks like she past her good looks on to Black Beauty. The mare is called Beauty and since the foal is pitch black I decided that Black Beauty was fitting.”

I'm fascinated by the way she talks about her horses. She's passionate, but loving and I can see that she truly cares about them. And I can see how much she cares for Harm. She's holding his arm as they stand by my side, giving him looks of love and pride every now and then. Harm is smiling warmly, looking at ease in a way I haven't seen him before.

“I think it's time for lunch. I wasn't sure about the sleeping arrangements so I prepared the guestroom as well as yours, Harmon.” Grandma releases Harm. “I'll just fill up new water for the horses and I'll be right there.”

Harm takes my hand and leads me to the car where we take our bags. I'm happy when he takes my hand again and leads me to the front door. I follow him into a small hallway where there are pictures everywhere. Harm takes his time to point out his Aunt and Uncle and their kids. Then we walk up a stair and come upstairs to the second floor. I can see four doors, Harm shows me the small bathroom, and he points out his grandmother's bedroom. Then he leads me to his bedroom. I smile when I see the picture of him and his father by the Stearman.

“That's a nice picture.” I put my bag down and sit on the bed as I look around the room and see small pieces of Harm's youth. Cartoon magazines, a teddy bear and pictures from his childhood.

Harm sit down beside me. “Are you surprised that I once was a kid?”

I laugh. “No, but this is a new side of you. So how many girls have you had in here?” I bump him with my elbow. “I can just picture you running around checking out all the girls in town.”

He chuckles. “This must come as a surprise to you, but as a teenager I was shy.”

“You?” I’m just as shocked as I sound. Picturing Harm as a shy teenage boy is hard for me to do.

He takes my hand. “About what you said earlier in the car. About your previous boyfriends not being good enough for you, because they aren't me. I think you might be right.”

I'm surprised that he admits it. “I don't understand why you have to be so mean. Wouldn't it be easier to admit what you're feeling?”

“Probably, but I haven't been ready. And I'm scared that if we mess up I'll lose you. I'm not good at relationships, you know that. I always find a way to ruin everything.”

I like that he's opening up to me. Finally, we're at a place where he feels safe enough to open up, and I'm happy that I'm here with him. But a question comes to mind; how long does he expect me to wait?

“Why are you like this with me? What's so special about me?” I'm afraid he'll shut down, but I have to know.

I can see that he's struggling to find his words and the hope in me that we'll finally be on the same page disappears. He's still not ready.

As I sit there staring at him, waiting for him to back down, he lean in and kiss me. It's not a deep kiss, but it's sweet and lingering and leaves me wanting more. He looks into my eyes and I know that he's leaving the next step up to me. I pull him in for a deeper kiss, pulling him on top of me on the bed. God he's a great kisser, I know that from the times we have shared kisses before, but this time it's something different. This time there's nothing holding us back, we're not partners anymore, there's no military rules hanging over our heads. I run my hand down his chest opening his belt buckle, I know what I want and my body is aching for him. I feel his hand up my thigh, pushing my skirt up and my panties down. I release his erection and spread my legs urging him closer. I'm so turned on I feel like I'm about to explode. One swift move and he's inside of me, we start to move frantically, it's fast and crazy and as I hear the front door open and shut we both explode. We're both breathing hard as grandma calls up the stairs, “Ready for lunch?”

“We'll be right there.” Harm yells as we both start to laugh. We separate and I find my panties on the floor. I kiss him sweetly after I put my panties on and he has buckled up his pants. He takes my hand and we leave the room and head downstairs.

To be continued...
