Living out fate, Chapter 4

The characters aren't mine, mistakes are

Three weeks later
September 2nd

Harm was more than a little proud when Mattie, with the help of her crutches, walked from the car and into their house for the first time. As he opened the door for her there was a loud “Welcome home!” from Mac, Trish and Frank, Bud and Harriet and their kids, A.J and Melissa, and Jennifer.

“Wow,” Mattie said.

Harriet and Mac had made a fabulous lunch, and after they had eaten people started leaving to give Mattie a chance to look around the house and relax. Mac and Harm took her to see her room, which Mac had decorated based on Mattie's wishes.

“It's great, Mac. Just the way I imagined it,” Mattie said as she looked around.

“I'm glad. And you have your own bathroom too,” Mac said and opened the door to Mattie's private bathroom.

“That's great,” Mattie said with a big smile.

“I unpacked everything in your boxes, but feel free to rearrange it to your wishes. I just didn't want you to come home to unopened boxes,” Mac explained.

“I think it's great as it is. Thank you,” Mattie said with tears in her eyes. “I think I'm a little overwhelmed. I might take a nap.”

Mac and Harm excused themselves and left Mattie alone. Mattie sat on the bed and looked around as the tears flowed down her face. It was all so perfect and to be walking into her new home instead of the wheelchair made it all so much better.

After leaving Mattie to take a nap Mac motioned for Harm to follow her to their room. Harm knew what she wanted, just like this morning when she had told him that it was baby making time.

“I guess now that Mattie is home doing it in the kitchen isn't an option,” Harm teased as he closed the door to their bedroom.

Mac smiled and started removing her clothes. “Are you ready?”

Harm moved closer to her and kissed her deeply. Scheduled sex was weird, but he did love making love to Mac and they always tried to make it special.

A while later Harm stepped out of the bathroom clad in his boxers. Mac was still in bed, following the Doctor's advice to increase the chance of conceiving. Harm moved to lie beside her on the bed. He pulled her close and softly caressed her face.

“I hope Mattie will be alright. She seemed a bit overwhelmed to finally be able to leave the hospital and getting back to normal. She's been so quiet lately,” Harm said.

“She'll be fine. We just have to give her some time to get used to the house and our routines,” Mac reassured.

“I guess,” Harm agreed. He smiled as he kissed her sweetly. “How are you feeling? Do you think a little Harm or Mac is swimming the right way?”

Mac laughed softly. “With your sense of direction, let's hope it's a little Mac.”

“My sense of direction? At least I have great aim,” he said with confidence.

Mac sobered up. “Let's hope you do.”

“Hey, we will make a baby. Promise me you won't give up hope even if it takes a while. We will have our baby.” Harm put his nose close to hers. “I promise you.”

Mac smiled. “I love you so much.”

“I love you too, Sarah.” Harm kissed her deeply, before he hugged her close. He knew they would get to experience the birth of their baby.

The next day
Mac and Harm's house

It was past ten when Mattie walked into the kitchen looking for breakfast. She was surprised to find Trish Burnett by the kitchen table, sipping tea and reading the newspaper.

“Harm had to go meet a client, but he wanted someone to be here with you today,” Trish explained with a warm smile. “How are you feeling?”

“I feel good. I think.” Mattie sat down by the table. “It's weird not being at the hospital.”

“That's understandable. How about if we went for a walk after you eat? Do you want me to make you and omelet?” Trish stood as she was talking and walked over to the fridge.

“I'd like that.” Mattie was glad that she didn't have to be alone in the house all day, and she liked Harm's mother very much.

“Trish found eggs and started on her task. While she prepared breakfast she chatted away about everyday stuff, asking Mattie what she wanted to do until school started.

“I don't know really. I guess I want to get to know the neighborhood, and maybe Mac will take me shopping. I need new clothes.” Mattie looked thoughtful. “I'm glad Harm and Mac married. Harm is so happy.”

“He really is. I had almost given up on him and now I have a daughter in law and a grandchild. I hope you don't mind that I call you that?” Trish questioned.

“Not at all, Trish. It's kinda nice,” Mattie said shyly. “But I'm sure Mac and Harm will have children of their own soon.”

Trish nodded happily. “I hope so. The more people I have to spoil the better. Let me take you shopping one day, Mattie. Maybe us girls can have a full day with shopping and spa. What do you think?”

Mattie smiled widely. “Seriously? I've never been to a spa.”

“Then we have to do it,” Trish said and reached for her phone. “I'm calling Martha right now to make an appointment.”

That night
Harm and Mac's house

Mac could smell something wonderful when she entered the house that night. It had been a long day for her and she couldn't wait to have dinner with her family and then just hang out in front of the TV the rest of the night.

“Hi,” she said as she entered the kitchen and found both Mattie and Harm by the counter.

“Hi, Mac,” Mattie offered a sweet smile. “We made teriyaki salmon. Harm found a new recipe that we had to try out.”

Harm walked over and kissed her sweetly. “How was your day.”

“Long,” Mac said as she hugged him close. “It smells amazing. Let me get changed first.”

Harm released her. “Hurry, because dinner is about to be served.”

Mac hurried to change and soon they were seated by the table enjoying a nice dinner. Mac asked Mattie how her first day home had been like.

“I actually had a great day with Trish. We checked out the neighborhood and we had lunch at this fabulous place where the servant called me Miss. Trish is pretty cool, she totally called her spa lady and this Saturday we're having a day at the spa. You too, Mac. And then she's taking us shopping,” Mattie took a breath. “She showed me her gallery, and I met with one of the artists. I think he was a little crazy, but his art was pretty cool.”

Mac and Harm shared an amused look. “What do you think of the neighborhood?” Mac asked.

“It's nice,” Mattie said and stood. “Is it okay if I go and hang out with Maria next door? We're the same age, and she goes to my school.”

“You already met someone?” Harm was surprised.

“Yeah, she was out walking her dog and we started talking and she asked me to stop by after dinner if I wanted to hang out,” Mattie explained. “So, can I?”

“Sure, go ahead. Just be careful so you don't overdo it,” Mac said with worry.

“We're just going to sit and chat,” Mattie reassured as she stood. “I won't be late.”

“Have fun,” Harm said.

After Mattie had left Harm started cleaning up after dinner while Mac excused herself to take a bath. It had been a stressful day and she needed a little peace and quiet.

“You know, the bathtub has room for one more,” she said as she was leaving the kitchen.

Harm turned to her with a sweet smile. “I'll be right there.”

Mac smiled as she walked upstairs, wondering if maybe her shoulders would be getting a little massage. Marriage was turning out to be amazing she decided.
