Subject: After that Huge Meal - Repost

A/N: The board's been pretty inactive, so I thought I'd re-post my short Thanksgiving story from last year.

After That Huge Meal
by Teacup

After the large meal, Harm stretched, hoisted himself out of his chair, and made his way into the kitchen. He could swear that he had gained ten pounds in the last hour from the feast they had just eaten: turkey, stuffing with sausage, green bean casserole, just to name a few of the dishes.

“Can I help clean things up?” he asked the hostess. True, Harriet had Mac and Jennifer in there, already helping, but Harm was aching to keep himself occupied. He had to do something or he would probably just fall asleep somewhere. Besides, he was naturally drawn to wherever Mac was. And, right now, that was the kitchen.

Harriet started to decline Harm’s offer, but Mac sensed that Harm wasn’t just asking out of politeness. “Harm can help cover the leftover yam bake with something so we can put it in the fridge,” she suggested.

“Sure,” Harm readily agreed. He saw that the casserole, minus most of the marshmallow topping which had disproportionately disappeared, had already been spooned into a bowl for storage.

He didn’t think the bowl had a lid though, and he didn’t see any aluminum foil. “Uh, cover it with something like what?” Harm asked.

“Like cellophane, sir,” answered Coates, handing the box of clear wrap, which had been on the counter right under the Commander.

“Right.” He felt a bit embarrassed. But he was sleepy after all that food; his brain cells weren’t all that alert.

That task completed, he awkwardly stood there, unsure if he should ask to do anything else. It seemed that they really did have everything under control, but he didn’t want to go back to the other room.

“Hey, Harm,” Mac saved him from his dilemma, “you look like you could use some fresh air. Wanna join me outside for a few minutes?”

“Yeah, that would be great!” He realized he sounded a little too excited. “I mean … fresh air is a good idea. After all that great food.”

“Don’t stay out there too long.” Harriet reminded them, “AJ is getting ready to perform his Thanksgiving poem in his little pilgrim outfit.”

“Oh, we definitely won’t miss that,” Mac assured her. “After Little AJ talked so much about how good it’s going to be, I’m looking forward to it.”

Once outside, Harm put his hands in his pockets and looked out over the muddy yard and damp leaves.

“So, what’s got you so restless, sailor?”

“I’m not restless,” he told Mac. “If anything, I was about to fall asleep after that huge meal. I guess my metabolism isn’t what it used to be.”

“Well, this chilly air ought to wake you up.” Mac rubbed her arms.

Suddenly concerned, Harm asked, “Why didn’t you bring your coat out?”

She shrugged. “We’ll only be out here a few minutes. Now, what’s on your mind, sailor?”

“Nothing. … But, I’m worried about you being cold.”

“Well, it gives you an excuse to warm me up.”

He tilted his head and smiled, “You think I want an excuse to hold you? That’s kind of presumptuous.”

Mac raised an eyebrow at him and half turned back to the door. “I can go back in where it’s warmer.”

“No! No, come here.” He motioned her to come closer.

She complied, and he wrapped himself around her, inhaling her sweet scent.

“So, why did you really come into the kitchen a few minutes ago?”

“Just … thought Harriet could use some more help,” he lied in part.

“We had already done most of the work,” Mac pointed out. “Jennifer and I had been helping her for nineteen minutes.”

Then she realized, “… You missed me.”

His first instinct was to deny it, but decided against it. Mac had been his main dinner companion, and it was after she had left the table that his energy seemed sapped. So, yeah, he had sought her out.

“Am I that transparent?”

“Only to me. … And maybe half the people inside. Usually, right now you’d be on the couch in front of the TV with the other menfolk in there.”

“Menfolk?” he questioned her term before commenting, “What can I say? The ‘menfolk’ don’t banter with me the way you do. I’m just trying to keep from falling asleep before AJ’s performance.”

She shook her head. “There’s more going on in that head of yours.”

“I’m just taking stock of all that I have to be thankful for on this holiday,” Harm admitted. “A lot has happened over the last year – a lot to be thankful for.”

Mac smiled. “I’d like to hear your list. But right now, we need to head back in to hear about the first Thanksgiving from our godson.” She slid out of his arms and moved towards the door.

“Right,” he agreed, but didn’t move except to yawn. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to stay awake for the whole thing and any other activities Little AJ has planned.”

“Well, take it easy on the pumpkin pie,” Mac advised. “Feeling over-stuffed and being in a food coma isn’t going to help if you expect to tackle me later today,” she challenged.

Harm looked confused. “I thought we agreed not to play football this year? – It’s too wet and muddy.”

With a glint in her eyes, Mac volleyed, “Who said anything about football?”

And, with that, she disappeared into the house.

Yes, indeed, Harm had a lot to be thankful about this year.
