Merry Christmas All!

It was the season, of that he was sure. Everywhere he looked Christmas was evident; at work; at the stores; on the streets and especially in his own home. He smiled about his memory of the morning after Thanksgiving when he woke up and the “honey do” list taped to his coffee mug simply said: “X-mas LIGHTS”; she did at least draw a smiley face behind it. How could he not spend all day untangling them, testing them and then climbing up and down that godforsaken ladder when there was a smiley face on the list? He couldn’t; he did it and did it happily. The rest of that weekend consisted of the search for the perfect tree, decorations and endless Christmas music. It occurred to him that Mac was making a serious attempt at turning this 6’4” Grinch into Santa’s own personal elf. And, as he pulled into his driveway, he had to laugh at the fact that he realized he was actually humming along with the Christmas music playing on his radio; no longer was he miffed that after Thanksgiving weekend when he got into his car all of the preset stations were tuned to the local station playing only Christmas music or that even the satellite presets were changed to Christmas music. There was a master plan and it was working.

The house was quiet when he walked in, he expected that, it was the time of day when quiet was the mandate in the MacKenzie-Rabb household. The glow of the lights on the tree and the soft instrumental Christmas music streaming through the house wide speaker system was the only indication that his family was indeed somewhere in the house. He knew he would find Mattie studying in her room because that is where she was just about every afternoon when he came home. Quietly knocking on the door as he opened it, he smiled at Mattie doing her homework while bobbing her head to some song blasting its way through her iPod ear buds and sucking on a CANDY CANE.

Moving into her line of site, he motioned for her to remove them; when she did he whispered “Cheating?”

She laughed and answered with a dramatic, “YES!” “Harm, how much Christmas music can anyone actually listen to before really losing their mind?”

Laughing with her and quirking an eyebrow he said, “Well, you tell me since I am sure you had a hand in changing all the presets in my car?”

She smiled, “You have to admit that was a brilliant idea, especially since you don’t know how to fix them.”

Rolling his eyes, “Oh God, is she still telling everyone about the man who can fly a 30 million dollar airplane but can’t change a radio station?”

“Yep,” Mattie giggled, “heard her tell one of the neighbors that this afternoon.”

He shook his head, “So she’s home huh?”

“Yeah, not sure where though”

“I’ll find her,” he turned to leave, “Dinner in an hour okay kiddo? No more candy canes!”

Closing Mattie’s door he stood still and just listened to the sounds of the house, that’s when he heard her and knew exactly where he would find her. Pausing in the hallway outside the nursery to watch the sight of his wife and their little miracle took his breath away. Mac was sitting in the rocking chair breastfeeding the baby and totally engrossed in the conversation she and the little bundle were having.

He knew the conversation was one sided but the baby was totally focused on Mac as if every word was understood “….and your Daddy just has to remember that Christmas can be a magical time of year, I am counting on you to help me with that. Operation JINGLE is well underway.”

“Operation JINGLE huh?” he smirked as he walked in and kissed the baby’s forehead.

“MmmmHmm,” she purred as he kissed her lips, “don’t try to hide the fact that it is working.”

“It might be,” Harm chuckled, “but can you stop making fun of the technically challenged? Mac, all of the neighbors are going to think I am an idiot.”

She smiled and looked at the baby, “Your sister is a little snitch, isn’t she?” The baby smiled at that statement as if somehow a three month old could be a conspirator in this whole operation.

“How was your day?” Mac asked as she handed the baby to Harm and stood to fix her top.

“Good,” he kissed the baby and inhaled deeply, loving the smell of clean baby and powder, “Yours?”

“Excellent,” she quipped.

“So, what’s it gonna take to get my radio stations back to normal?” he asked, trying to give her his best pouty face.

“Oh,” Mac turned and walked out of the room as she said, “more than that pouty face my friend.”

“Your Momma is gonna drive me crazy.”

“I heard that,” she said as she continued on her way to the kitchen, “and it is a short drive.”

Dinner was always a family event, it was important to Mac that they connect as a family unit at least once a day. It gave them a chance to coordinate schedules, hear about Mattie’s day and just be together. Friday was the only day of the week that Mattie was excused so she could be with her friends, and that was a new development that Harm had to negotiate on the teen’s behalf.

“So, Mattie what is the plan for the weekend?” Mac asked as they waited for Harm to put the last of the dinner on the table.

“Finals are next week, so pretty much just study,” then noticing the twinkle in her mother’s eye, she warily asked, “why?”

“Well, I was thinking cookies,” Mac smiled brightly.

Laughing, Mattie agreed, “Only if we can keep the Christmas music to a minimum, I am begging you.”

“See,” Harm said as he sat down to the table, “I am not the only one with Christmas songs stuck in my head.”

“Okay, Okay,” Mac gave up, “the Christmas music will be limited, I promise. But, you,” she said pointing her fork at Harm, “need to learn to fix your presets yourself. There is a manual, read it.” Mattie laughed heartily at the two of them; she knew she was blessed by the fact that this odd little family unit was the best thing that had ever happened to her.

Later in the evening, Harm put down the book he was reading in bed when Mac walked in after feeding the baby. “Asleep?”

“Yep,” she smiled, “full tummy and out like a light, just like Daddy.”

“Give me a break,” he whined, “Mac a twenty minute nap after dinner, that’s it. You know, I was the one up at 2am this morning.”

“I know,” she giggled, “and you know how much I appreciate that don’t you?”

“Yes, but,” he quipped, “it would seem logical that the already warm milk with the God made nipples would be easier in the middle of the night.”

“Possibly,” Mac acknowledged, “but then I would be too tired to do this.” She leaned over and kissed him. It was a kiss that he knew was going to lead to other things and judging by her current state of undress, it was going to go there fast.

Thirty minutes later, they lay together spent, sated and happy. Harm gently ran his hand from Mac’s hip to her breast and back again, soothing her into an even bigger state of relaxation. “I love you,” he whispered.

“And I love you,” she smiled and snuggled closer.

“Mac,” Harm stated seriously, “Thank you for everything you are doing to get me in the Christmas spirit.”

She leaned back and looked him in the eyes, “Is it really working?”

“Yes,” he stroked her cheek, “it is. Somewhere along the way, I have stopped thinking of Christmas as a sad time and have started looking forward to whatever Christmassy thing you were going to spring on me.”

She smiled, “Good, because next year we will have a toddler and I really want to make some good memories for our child Harm. I want to make sure that Christmas is always magical and whimsical, not sad or a time to brood.”

“I don’t brood,” he said somewhat hurt.

“No, not anymore,” she kissed him, “you don’t. But, you have to admit, if I hadn’t masterminded operation JINGLE, you would not be as into the holiday as you are today.”

He thought about that for a minute, “How long have you been planning operation JINGLE?”

“Since the day the baby was born,” she snuggled back into him and continued, “Neither one of us had great childhoods, but Christmas at my house was one of the best times of the year. It always seemed to signal a truce of some sort, you would think that my Dad would be worse at Christmas with all the holiday parties and drinking, but he wasn’t. It was the one time of year that I could count on him to be funny, and gentle and just,” she paused.

“Just what?” he encouraged.

“Just Daddy,” Mac whispered, “he was my Daddy.”

He squeezed her tightly to him and rolled over on top of her and kissed her with as much passion as he could muster. When the kiss ended, he waited until she opened her eyes then said, “I want to be the Daddy that loves Christmas Mac. I promise you I will be.”

She smiled, “Good.” Then to lighten the mood she teased, “But do you BELIEVE in Santa?”

He chuckled, “I believe in the spirit of Santa, but do I believe that there is a jolly ole elf that lives in the North Pole and flies around in a sleigh, no, I don’t.”

She studied him for a minute, “Hmmmm, then I guess operation Rudolf will have to be next years’ project.”

“Oh God,” he groaned as he rolled his eyes at her and kissed her again. She responded passionately and flipped them back over so that she was on top and began singing, “Santa Baby…” and then whispered as she slipped him inside of her, “sing with me sailor or I’ll…” she never finished that sentence; didn’t have to. He knew what was going to happen next if he didn’t start singing and he was willing to sing any Christmas song on the planet to make sure she did NOT stop moving.
