Subject: Light of My Heart, cont'd

Jen, very upset, especially for Harm, but trying not to overstep her bounds with her superior officers, “But,but... *Ma’am*, the Commander – Harm, sounded SO happy that you were joining him – he was acting like this was a *done deal* -- that you and he had *definite* plans for this evening to go to this thing, together?! If you don’t show up – he’ll be devastated! I think you’re making a big mistake!”

Mac, a bit on the defensive, “Yes, we *did* have plans to go to this *thing* together, but that was before I had the fiasco from hell that kept me rockin’ till the 11th hour!! I’m beat and want nothing more than to crash on my couch and curl up in my nice warm apartment!"

(Now shrugging): "Besides, the Commander asked me to this ‘thing* as he was just trying to make me feel good after my accident last week, when he found out I didn’t have other plans. He’ll be perfectly fine, Jen – don’t worry so much!! He’ll have Professor Montes there, who, by the way, I’m *sure* won’t be at all disappointed that Harm will be stag AND a ton of other beautiful women there who will keep him on his toes, entertained, and happy. He’s better off without me there. I took up his whole weekend last week. He needs this! He’ll be the ‘beau of the ball’ -- he won’t even notice that I’m not there and he won’t be *devastated*, Jen – just a little disappointed -- he’ll get over it.”

Jen, very disappointed herself, frowning, “Whatever you say, Colonel, but I think you are sadly and truly mistaken. If you’re almost ready, I think we should get going.”

Mac’s Apartment
Friday, New Year’s Eve
December 31st, 2004

Jen had offered to stay and have a cup of hot cocoa with Mac and some of the Christmas cookies that Harm had made last week. Plus, she stayed, too, because Harm had asked her to help Mac out with errands and house cleaning and helping Mac with washing her hair and stuff like that – just in case Mac had any repercussions from the accident. Mac was perfectly fine, although she did look extremely exhausted from the past couple days of intense JAG duty on her own, so Jen wanted to be there this evening, just in case, indeed, while Mac took a shower. She also didn’t have to be at her place until 2230 or so. ALSO, she was now really feeling extra loyal to honour Harm’s wish to help Mac out this week, especially because Mac was now about to do something that Jen *knew* would break his heart. She thought she just might stick around awhile longer to see if she could talk Mac into going to the Willard.

Mac came out with her robe and slippers and tousling her hair with a towel to dry it, “Ahh, that feels much much better!" Pointing to the cookies: "They are *delicious*, aren’t they, Jen?" Chuckling, she said: "I think I’ve gained three pounds since Harm walked into my apartment this week. He left me four pints of my favorite ice cream flavours, too!! He knows me so well, that man! He really is a great person to have as a best friend, you know!”

Jen, “Exactly, Ma’am, which is why I think you *should* go tonight! Remember, you’re *his* best friend, too and that’s what best friends do – they don’t let each other down. By not joining him, you’re really letting him down, Ma’am!”

Mac, calmly, matter-of-factly, and so pseudo darn sure of herself, “No, no, Jen, it’s not like that at all…” Just then, her phone rang.

Mac, motioning to Jen that she would take this in her room. “Hello, Colonel Sarah MacKenzie speaking.”

Caller, sighing in relief , “Oh, great, I got you – *you’re* still home! Colonel Mackenzie, I’m so sorry to bother you or disturb your New Year’s Eve plans. This is Dr. Matthews – remember I treated you last week in the hospital ER after your accident. I noticed you stopped by Bethesda on Tuesday afternoon for follow-up and everything looked like it was healing perfectly – if not completely healed – that’s great!”

Mac, very concerned, “Yes, I remember, you Dr.Matthews and everything is completely healed – thank you. Why are you calling tonight --what is it – is anything wrong!?”

Dr. Matthews, “No, not at all – I’m actually looking for Commander Rabb – Harm. They were supposed to give you an envelope I had for him when you had stopped by for your check-up. I have been trying to contact him all week and I’ve had no luck, whatsoever. I’ve called his home number, I’ve called his cell number, and he’s not answering his work phone. And I didn’t want to send him this by post or email. I noticed on his chart that you were listed as his next –of- kin and the person to contact, despite the fact that he has a living mother, step-father, and grandmother. So, with he being *your* listed next-of-kin and you being *his*, I kind of surmised pretty much what he had already alluded to me when I spoke to him the night of your accident – that you and he are actually much much more than just *‘friends'*. I mean, the way he looked at you and stroked you and held your hand all night long, it was highly apparent to all of us, anyway, even before he told me. He told me of the plans that you and he had made to have a baby in the near future. Anyway, the urgency of my call is that I HAVE to get a final commitment from him before *this* Monday whether he’ll be attending the 6 week long IVF clinic and classes. It starts this Monday evening. The Commander signed up and paid the $2500 fee, but he didn’t confirm yet, or specify whether you would be attending *with* him. There’s a *huge* waiting list for places and I really need to know by tonight – Monday morning, latest. I mean, he’s welcome to attend, for sure, as you are, if your work schedule would allow -- and he even offered to pay for your spot, once you confirmed. But, I need to know-- will he be joining for the whole time. *Are* you joining? What's the deal? Plus, I gotta tell you – couples don’t usually attend these classes until they are at a point where they *know* for certain, that there’s no other means, whatsoever, to have children the good, old-fashioned way. His fertility checked out okay and you are perfectly fine, as well, so other than your ages, I don’t see the need yet for you to be so strongly considering IVF. Do you think you could give me an answer, now, Colonel, on his behalf, for yourself, or the both of you, or could you help me get a hold of him – please advise me!”

Mac, in shock, trying to take in all of what he just said, just got to the point as she asked, “Excuse, me, Dr, but, may I ask – you DID see my chart, didn’t you, that I have severe endometriosis and a very slight chance of getting pregnant?"

Dr. Matthews, “Ah, yes, Colonel, I did see that you had a HISTORY of what was diagnosed as end-stage endometriosis and you were assessed as having less than a five percent chance of carrying a full-term pregnancy... but that was over two months ago. It’s uncanny. Your condition has changed, *considerably*, in the past couple months. When we brought you in, as we always do with a single female of childbearing age, we checked your reproductive organs thoroughly and found no particular pathology, despite what your recent medical history indicated. It was exactly as I had said to you that night – aside from your minor injuries, you were perfectly healthy, in every way! I would have informed you if it had been otherwise. These things do happen, Colonel. As I also said to you that night – enjoy the miracle! Now, what should I do? Must I still contact the Commander? We WILL give him the full refund of what he paid -- don't worry. Can you help me out here?”

Mac, with tears in her eyes, “Dr. Matthews – *as you said* -- perhaps the Commander and I need to..., “ she quietly murmured, “proceed with the good old-fashioned *process* of doing *things*. Why don’t you take the Commander’s name off the class list, for now. Please, give another couple the opportunity to participate – a couple who need it more than us, at this point. I’ll inform Harm as soon as I see him. Thank you for your call, Dr. Matthews. Happy New Year. ”

Dr. Matthews, “I’m very happy to hear this news, Colonel. Best wishes to you and *both* you and Harm for a very Happy New Year, together, too! Good-bye!”

Mac slowly paced out of her bedroom in a daze. Jen noticed immediately Mac’s changed expression.

Jen, “Ma’am, is everything alright?”
