Christmas 2005

North of Union Station
Evening, Dec 20th

The elevator slowly worked its way to the second floor, its lone passenger waiting, not so patiently, for it to finally stop. It had been a long three weeks since her last visit and she was anxious to get inside. Finally the elevator arrived at its destination. Hurrying to the door she unlocked and opened it to find the loft cold, dark and empty.

"Harm? Are you here?"

No one answered.

He should have been there; his plane was scheduled to get in before hers. A shiver ran down her spine, something wasn’t right. Mac put her things down, turned up the thermostat and checked the empty loft; he hadn’t been there at all. That’s when something caught her eye, the red flashing light on the answering machine. After they decided to keep the loft, they also agreed to keep the phone and answering machine. Even with modern technology, cell phones still had to be turn off on airplanes and in meetings, plus there was always the risk of a dropped call or message.

Hoping the blinking light was a message for her and not some salesman, Mac pressed the button.

"Hi Mac, I know you there before me, I’m sorry this is not how I wanted our first Christmas to get started. I have been delayed in London and missed my flight, but I am definitely on the next one. I should only be three hours later than scheduled. I love you, see you soon."

Mac was relived. As she set about unpacking her things, she thought about the last eight months.

Leaving McMurphy’s after the “coin toss” they had come back to the loft. They talked, really talked, about the future, about the past and they made love. By the next morning they agreed to accept both transfers. They reasoned if only one accepted the transfer most of the time would be spent on the new command. That would leave the other, the one that gave up the military, alone, on the outside looking in. This relationship, even though they had known each other for nine years, was new and could suffer greatly. At one point Harm even joked how ‘them’ the decision was. In the nine years they had know each other, they had never done anything the traditional way. They had never dated, but were now engaged and instead of planning a wedding, they were planning commands on opposite sides of the world.

Mac enjoyed her visits to London and Harm loved to coming to San Diego. In July, Harm finalized custody of Mattie and was able to transfer her to a naval rehab facility. She immediately began to improve. Harm said it was the facility, Mac told him it was her “Navy Dad’s” faith in her that made her stronger.

Summer turned into fall. In between Harm relocating his office to Naples and Mac ironing out the difficulties of the new command, they managed a romantic get away in Hawaii. Their friends had stopped asking about a wedding.

Harm and Mac had three weeks leave for Christmas and both were determined that before the holiday was over they would have a plan in place to be married and assigned to at least the same continent.

Mac’s trip down memory lane came to a sudden halt when she noticed it beginning to snow and realized if they were going to eat she needed to get to the store and buy some food.

Two hours later –

Mac opened the door to a completely different apartment. There was a fire burning in the wood stove, lights were on and music was playing. The apartment was warm and inviting.

"Hey, you didn’t leave a message, I’ve been worried." Harm said as he came down the bedroom stairs.

"I thought I would be back before you got here." Mac said while putting the bags on the bar

"We caught a tail wind and got in early." He was right behind her.

She turned and was in his arms, "I’m glad you’re finally here."

"Me too." He held on tight, kissing his future wife and trying not the think about when they would have to part.

Mac didn’t want to let go, but reality reared its ugly head, "There are more bags in the car."

Harm was reluctant to release Mac, but did so only because he wanted her undivided attention later. "Yes ma’am I shall return."

While Harm went downstairs to get the last of the bags, Mac retrieved a box from her luggage and placed it on the bar.

Entering the loft, arms full, Harm announced "That’s everything.” He then spied something on the bar. “This wasn’t here before. What is it?"

"It’s a present silly, you know it is Christmas."

"Who’s it for?"

"You."

"Who’s it from?"

"Me."

"Can I open it now?"

Taking a deep breath, "Yes"

Harm began to unwrap the gift, but Mac stopped him. She was all of the sudden very nervous. "You know I love you right."

"Yes." Harm noticed her nervousness, “Are you okay?”

“Yes, just a little unsure how you’re going to like the gift.”

“Is it from you?”

“Part of it is.”

Now Harm was confused. “If it’s from you, even partly I’m going to love it.”

Harm opened the gift. Inside the box was a handmade, fabric candy cane ornament. Embroidered on it was ‘Harm and Sarah’ and the date 12-25-05.

"It’s for our first Christmas together, I found a little shop in San Diego that makes them and couldn’t resist. I wanted to get something special for our first Christmas together. I was hoping we could start a tradition, you know an ornament each year, something that we could look at and remember the year."

Harm kissed his fiancée, “that’s a wonderful idea.”

Mac’s took a calming breath and pointed to the box, "there’s more."

Inside, under the tissue paper was another ornament, a round ball with delicate embroidery stitches covering it. As he turned it around Harm noticed it too had a name and date

Baby’s First Christmas
