Better late than never, I guess. I hope to finish this story soon. :)

Lost chapter 14

One week later

Mac's apartment
Monday morning

Harm whistled as he reached for his suitcase and left the bedroom. He put the suitcase down by the front door and walked into the kitchen.

“Coming?”

Mac nodded as she put the paper down. “Yeah.”

“Mac is everything okay?” Harm wondered.

“I'm fine,” Mac said as she walked past him.

Harm watched as she walked towards the apartment door. “You've been quiet since the meeting with the Admiral on Friday,” Harm said.

“Are we ready to go?” Mac asked, ignoring what he had said.

“Mac, what's going on?” Harm asked stubbornly.

Mac hesitated. “It's nothing. I just have a lot on my mind.”

“Why don't you share it with me?” Harm suggested. “Is it about our vacation?”

“No, it has nothing to do with that. I'm looking forward to seeing your Mom again, and meeting Frank,” Mac said with a smile. “Let's go.”

Harm nodded. “Fine.”

Later that night
La Jolla, California

Harm finished cleaning up after dinner and walked to the living room to join the others. He stopped when he heard his mother ask Mac about what had happened in Afghanistan.

“We were so happy to hear that you were safe. I know we don't know you all that well, but I've heard so much about you over the years from Harm that it feels like I know you very well. It must have been very scaring to be captured?” Trish asked.

“Trish, maybe Sarah don't want to talk about it,” Frank warned.

Mac smiled reassuringly. “It's fine. I'm very happy to be safe here in America. It's difficult to explain to civilians, but I wasn't scared. When I leave to go on a mission I accept that being captured or killed even, can happen. The day I get scared by the thought of that is the day I have to leave the Marine corps.”

“That's very admirable,” Trish said. “You must be proud.”

“I wasn't proud after what happened over there. It has taken me some time to come to terms with what happened. I had to take lives, and that's never something to be proud of, even though it was my life or theirs. I'm happy to be alive, but I'm sad by all the innocent people who die because of what is going on over there.” Mac explained.

“I hope the war ends soon,” Trish said.

“I hope so too, but I have a feeling that it'll last for a long time. I met an Afghan girl, she was thirteen and she had never been allowed to attend school. Her uncle had thought her to read and write, and her biggest wish was to become a lawyer like me. She said something that will stick with me forever.” Mac said something in Farsi, and both Trish and Frank looked questioningly at her. “It means; One day my country will allow me to become a lawyer like you, we just have to fight for it first.”

“A wise young girl,” Frank said.

Mac nodded. “It's her freedom we're fighting for.”

Trish smiled. “I'm so happy my son finally came to his senses. It's wonderful to have you here with us, Sarah.”

“Thank you Trish, that means a lot to me,” Mac said honestly.

“Does anyone want coffee?” Harm asked as he decided to join them.

“I think coffee and ice cream would be good right now,” Trish said and stood. “I'll be right back.”

Harm sat down beside Mac and took her hand. “Mom's gonna try and make us fat.”

Frank chuckled. “She's been trying to do that for years.”

“Don't worry, I'll be allowed to start exercising again soon and I'll whip that fat off of you before you know it,” Mac said.

“I can't wait, “Harm said and rolled his eyes.

They all laughed. “What's so funny?” Trish asked as she walked into the living room. “I found chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I'm so happy Harm has finally found someone who actually appreciate good food.”

Harm smiled and kissed Mac sweetly. He couldn't have agreed more with his mother.

Later that night

They had just finished the most quiet and calm lovemaking they could manage. Mac was sound asleep while Harm was awake thinking. The day had been great. Harm knew that Trish liked Mac from the few times they had met previously, and there was no doubt that Trish was happy that Harm brought Mac home as something more than just a friend and colleague. Frank and Mac had instantly found a common interest of history, and especially American war history and had already had several discussions about American role in the world wars. Harm was relieved to see that everything was going great. He had however been surprised that Mac opened up as much as she did. He knew Mac was a very private person, who only let very few people in on her personal life and for him to hear her share so much with his mother and stepfather warmed his heart.

Harm untangled himself from Mac and got out of bed. He wasn't tired and decided to bring a book downstairs with him.

Harm was surprised to see Frank sitting on the couch when he came downstairs.

“I started watching this documentary about the criminal system, and I just had to finish watching it,” Frank explained when he noticed Harm. “You couldn't sleep?”

“Too much coffee,” Harm said and joined Frank on the couch.

“Sarah is a nice woman, you've done good,” Frank said.

“Thanks for greeting her so warmly, that means a lot to me,” Harm said.

“It was great to finally meet her. Over the years I've heard so much about her, it's good to see that my impression of her is right. I do have to admit that I wonder why it has taken the two of you so long to get together?” Frank said.

Harm hesitated. “It's mostly my fault. I've been scared to commit.”

“What changed?” Frank asked.

“I finally grew up, I guess,” Harm said with a smile.

Frank laughed softly. “It's about time,” he teased.

Harm laughed. “I'm sure Mom had given up on me.”

“She's been sure you'd bring home Sarah eventually,” Frank reassured.

Harm sobered up. “I almost lost her.”

“It puts it all into perspective, doesn't it?” Frank said.

“It does,” Harm agreed. “I'm actually thinking about asking her to marry me.”

Frank nodded. “I think that sounds like a very good idea.”

Harm chuckled. “I hope she does too.”
