Lost Chapter 12

The characters aren't mine...

Mistakes are...

Bethesda Naval Hospital

Mac looked anticipating on her Doctor. He had listened to her heart, checked her blood pressure, taken her blood and so on and so forth. Mac wanted to know the status of her condition.

“So?” Mac said as Commander Lee hung up the phone.

“The lab is pleased with your tests. I'm pleased with your recovery, Colonel. However, it doesn't look like you've gained much weight. Are you eating properly?” Commander Lee asked.

“The way Harm keeps feeding me it's a wonder I don't weigh a ton,” Mac joked.

“So it's not for lack of food then. I want you to take it easy for two more weeks before you start physiotherapy. Take small walks, but don't overdo it. It's important that we don't rush anything. It's only been two weeks since you almost died,” Commander Lee reminded her. “How are you doing otherwise? Do you sleep well?”

“I had some problems sleeping at first, but I've been seeing a therapist and as much as I hate to admit it, it helps. I haven't had any nightmares for two days now,” Mac said.

“That's good. Let's schedule an appointment in two weeks then,” Commander Lee said.

“Commander, when you say no exercise, do you mean no sex too?” Mac asked.

“If you're comfortable with having sex, I don't see any problems with it,” Commander Lee said.

Mac smiled. “So, can I go now?”

Commander Lee laughed softly. “Yes, you can Colonel.”

Mac was thoughtful as she left the hospital. The last two weeks had seemed like an eternity and her stay in Afghanistan seemed so long ago. She was feeling better, but what had happened had changed something inside her. Never before had she felt so much hate and evil, no matter how bad a situation she had been in. So many lived had been lost after 9/11, and not just that day, but in the war too. She wondered where it would end.

Bud and Harriet's apartment
Washington D.C

Harriet placed another piece of pie in front of Mac and studied her friend.

“How are you doing, ma'am?”

Mac hesitated. “I'm not sure actually.”

“What do you mean?” Harriet wondered.

“It's hard to explain,” Mac said as she took another bite of Harriet's blueberry pie.

“You've been through so much,” Harriet said sadly.

“The last two weeks has felt like an eternity, Harriet. What happened over there has changed something, I just can't explain it. I don't know how I feel about the war now.” Mac hesitated. “Harriet, I don't want to die without doing something more with my life. I want what you have. I want to be with a great man and have babies.”

“What's stopping you then?” Harriet asked.

“I don't have the best track record with men,” Mac said.

Harriet smiled. “Maybe you haven't met the right man yet. Or maybe he's close and you haven't noticed yet.”

“I think I do have the right man actually,” Mac said and blushed a little as she thought abut Harm.

Harriet noticed the blush and asked; “ Really? Do I know this man?”

Mac nodded.

Harriet's smile grew wider. “Is he tall, dark, handsome?”

“Promise me you'll keep this to yourself,” Mac said.

“Harriet nodded. “My lips are sealed. So when did this happen?”

“It started right before I was sent on that assignment in Afghanistan. We didn't talk about it, but something changed. He's been by my side these past weeks, and two days ago we... Well, let's just say that we figured something out,” Mac said and blushed even more.

Harriet wanted to jump up and down, but she clutched to the kitchen table and smiled widely. “Finally!”

“Yes, finally. But we hasn't had the serious talk yet. We started to on Thursday night, but then we got sidetracked and he left the next morning...” Mac noticed Harriet's curious look. “What?”

“Was it wonderful? I have to know. After six years of dancing around the obvious attraction...” Harriet beamed with excitement.

Mac laughed. “Harriet, I' don't kiss and tell.”

“I'm just so happy for you. And for the Commander. He was so heartbroken when you were reported missing. It was killing him not knowing if you were alive or... Oh, this is amazing!”

Mac sobered up. “Harriet, you have to promise me that you won't tell anyone! When the time is right Harm and I will tell the Admiral, but we're not ready for that yet.”

“I promise. This will be my secret,” she promised. “He's coming home tonight, right? You can have the talk, and then you can get married and have those cute Navy/Marine babies. Ow...”

“Harriet...”

“I'm sorry, but I'm just really happy,” Harriet said and got a smart gleam in her eyes. “The Admiral won't be surprised though.”

“I know. He was the one who told me to go for it actually,” Mac said seriously. “I'm sure the Admiral will be happy for us, but for now I want to keep it to ourselves. I don't even know what Harm is thinking about us.”

“I just hope the two of you won't find a way to mess this up. There's something special between you and the Commander, something either one of you can't escape from. I know I'm a romantic when I say this, but if two people ever was destined to be together it must be the two of you,” Harriet said sweetly.

Mac smiled. “Thank you Harriet. You're a good friend.”
