Chapter 6

The characters aren't mine...
Mistakes are...

Mac's hospital room

Harm walked quietly over to Mac's bed. Her eyes were still closed and he didn't want to wake her up. He sat quietly by her bed thinking about how wonderful it was to be in the same room as her again. He studied her pale face, her bruised arms and wondered what she had been through.

Then he remembered how healthy and vibrant she looked before she left for the assignment in Afghanistan, and their last conversation.

Three weeks earlier

Harm whistled as he entered his office. He jumped a little as his chair turned and Mac appeared.

“Damn it Mac, I told you not to do that,” he said with annoyance.

Mac laughed softly. “Did I scare you?”

“No, I'm not scared. But I hate surprises,” he said with a sweet smile. “What are you doing here anyway?”

“Just wanted to say goodbye,” she said as she stood. She offered a cute smile as he looked at her surprised. “The Admiral is sending me to Afghanistan.”

“Oh?” Harm said.

“They need a more experienced JAG to deal with the murders,” Mac explained.

Harm stepped closer to her. “So I guess dinner is off then?”

“I guess,” Mac said.

“I was looking forward to it,” Harm said and touched her arm lightly.

She smiled warmly, her eyes sparkling. “Me too.”

“I'll be here when you get back,” he said and kissed her cheek before stepping away from him. “Be careful over there Marine.”

Mac needed a little time to compose herself before functioning again. “I will,” she said finally.

Back to present

“What are you thinking about, Sailor?”

Harm realized that Mac was awake and talking to him. He smiled. “Welcome home.”

“Thank you,” she said with a small smile.

“How are you feeling?” he asked and leaned closer to her.

“I must look awful,” she said.
“You look beautiful. It's good to see you, Mac,” he said and his eyes watered. “I've never been more worried in my life.”

“It's good to be home,” Mac said and her eyes felt heavy. “I'm sorry, I'm really sleepy.”

Harm reached for her hand. “Don't be sorry. You need to rest.”

“It's good to see you, Harm,” Mac said as her eyes shut. “Really good.”

Harm watched her for a minute before he stood. He remembered that he had forgotten to give her the flowers and teddy bear. He really didn't want to leave her, but he had a lot to do at JAG. He decided to come back later, so he left the gifts on her nightstand and kissed her cheek before leaving the room.

Over the next two days he visited her after work, and they talked for a while and then Mac fell asleep again. Harm wished that he could see her more, but JAG was busy and Mac tired easily so he kept his visits to one per day. It was frustrating to see Mac so weak, but Harm had talked to her Doctor again and he had reassured him that it was normal.

On the third day Mac sat up when he came to her room. She smiled when she saw him, and her smile widened when she saw what he had brought.

“You didn't?”

Harm laughed softly. “Your favorite burger, and fries for you.”

“Thank you,” Mac said and went for the burger right away.

Harm watched her eat. He was happy to see that she seemed better. He must have stared too much because Mac stopped eating and looked at him. What?”

“I'm just happy to see that you look better,” he answered honestly

“I do feel better, Harm. My Doctor is happy too, but he won't send me home until next week,” Mac said and sounded a little unhappy.

“You have to listen to the Doctor, Mac,” Harm warned. “You almost died remember?”

“I know I did, but I'm going crazy here. I just want to bath in my tub and sleep in my bed,” Mac complained.

“I understand that, but promise me you'll take it easy,” Harm said sweetly.

Mac nodded and chuckled lightly. “Okay, I promise.”

Harm smiled. “Good.”

After a little while Mac started showing signs of exhaustion and Harm said good night and left her room. He wondered if she'd tell him more about what she'd experienced when she was held captured soon. He knew he couldn't rush her, but he hoped she'd let him in because he could see that she was troubled.

Two days later Harm neared Mac's door when he heard voices coming from the open door.

“I keep having these weird nightmares,” Mac said.

A male voice said; “That's pretty normal Mac. It'll get better.”

“I guess. I just can't seem to get enough sleep. I never feel rested when I wake up,” Mac continued.

“You should talk to someone. After my first tour I was a mess, and I started drinking again. My Mom persuaded me to see a therapist and eventually I did. I'm not the one to sit down and whine, but it helped to talk about what I'd experienced over there. This time I made an appointment the second I was released from the hospital and I had the first appointment yesterday. I could give you my therapist’s number,” the man said.

“I'm sure the nightmares will pass soon. I guess it's just a reaction to everything that happened,” Mac said.

“Don't wait too long to seek help. It wont get better if you keep it buried,” the man warned.

“I'll be fine JJ,” Mac said.

“Well, I better go. Let me know if you need someone to talk to. I'm a pretty good listener,” the man said.

“I will. Thanks JJ,” Mac said.

Harm decided to make his presence known. He knocked on the door frame.

“Hi, Harm,” Mac greeted him with a smile. “You're early.”

“Yeah, I had to talk to someone in the building concerning a case and I thought I'd stop by you before heading back to JAG,” Harm explained.

“Lt. JJ Mack, this is Commander Harmon Rabb,” Mac said.

The two men shook hands. “You were with Mac in Afghanistan?”

JJ nodded. “That's right, sir. I owe the Colonel my life.”

“I'm glad you all made it home. How are you Lt?” Harm asked.

“My leg's broken in two places, but other than that I can't complain, sir,” JJ said with a smile. “Well, I better go. See you Colonel.”

Mac and Harm said goodbye to the young Marine and Harm sat down beside Mac's bed.. “How are you Marine?”

“Getting better. My Doctor says I might be going home on Friday,” Mac said happily.

“That's great. I should probably stop by your place and do some cleaning and buy some groceries then,” Harm said thoughtfully. “Don't want you to go home to a dirty apartment.”

“I already asked Harriet to do that, Harm. She stopped by with some more of those cookies I love,” Mac said and pointed to the basket by her bed. “She offered to pick me up on Friday too and bring me home.”

“Oh,” Harm said and tried to hide that he was a little hurt. “That's good. Do you need me to do anything?”

“Nothing that comes to mind right now,” Mac said and yawned. “I'm sorry.”

Harm smiled warmly. “You don't have to apologize, Mac.”

“I hate being this tired all the time,” Mac mumbled.

“Are you sleeping alright?” Harm asked, and used the opportunity she had created to ask about what he had overheard earlier.

“Sure,” Mac answered and shrugged as she did. “I miss my bed though.”

“You would talk to me if something was bothering you, right?” Harm asked.

“Of course,” Mac said and yawned again. “I better rest for a while.”

Harm nodded and knew he wouldn't get anywhere with her at the moment. He was disappointed that Mac didn't trust him enough to tell him that she had trouble sleeping.

“I'll stop by tomorrow then,” Harm said and stood. He leaned in and kissed her cheek. “See you.”

She smiled. “Bye.”

As Harm walked out of there he had a bad feeling that Mac was pushing him away.
