Lost Chapter 7

The characters aren't mine..
Mistakes are...

Mac's apartment

Mac breathed out in relief as she entered her apartment. On the way from the hospital she'd been feeling anxious and uneasy. She couldn't explain the feeling or why she felt that way, but from the moment she stepped outside the hospital doors and until she entered her own apartment she couldn't relax.

“Is everything okay, Colonel?” Harriet asked.

“Yeah, everything's good. I just felt uneasy when we left the hospital,” Mac admitted.

“I'm sure it was because you've been inside for so long,” Harriet reassured. “But you'll call me if you don't feel better?”

“Harm's coming by later, so I'll be fine. But thank you, Harriet. For the cookies, the visits and just for caring. It means a lot to me,” Mac said with a warm smile.

“Of course. You're one of my closest friends, and this is what friends do for each other,” Harriet said. “It was though for all of us when we waited for news about you. The Commander almost didn't go home for a week.”

“He didn't?” Mac asked surprised.

“We tried to make him, but even the Admiral failed. The Commander wanted to go look for you, but thankfully the Admiral stopped that,” Harriet said.

“I'm glad he didn't. Afghanistan isn't a very nice place for the well trained Marines,
a Navy Commander would be lost in those mountains,” Mac said.

Harriet smiled. “The Commander cares about you, he'd follow you to hell and back.”

Mac nodded. “It goes both ways.”

After a little while Harriet left and Mac was alone. The first thing she did was to take a shower, and after a short phonecall to her little sister Chloe she went to bed.

When Harm came three hours later Mac was exhausted. She'd been having terrible nightmares and woken up several times screaming. Harm noticed how tired she looked.

“Have you been overdoing it, Mac? You should take a nap while I cook,” he said and kissed her cheek.

“I look that terrible?” Mac asked.

“No, you just look a little tired that's all,” Harm reassured her.

“I tried to sleep, but I wasn't tired enough so I read a book instead,” she lied.

Harm studied her. “Mac, are you sure you're feeling as good as you say you are?”
“Harm, don't!” Mac snapped.

“Don't what? Worry about you? Sorry Mac, but guess what I care about you. If you need to talk I'm here for you,” he said softly.

Mac felt terrible about her reaction. “I'm sorry. I guess I'm still a little out of it.”

Harm put his arms around her and hugged her close. “I'm here for you.”

“Thank you,” Mac said and let herself melt into his safe embrace.

Two days later

Mac breathed fast as she more or less ran up the stairs to her apartment and unlocked the door. She hurried inside and closed the door. What was happening to her? She had been out walking when the repairman across the street that was working on replacing a window of a building had dropped the old window onto the street and it broke into pieces. Mac had panicked, her heart raced and she started hyperventilating. She had hurried home and now she sat on the couch and tried to calm down.

She jumped as her phone rang. “Hello?”

“Mac, you sound out of breath. Everything okay?” Harm asked.

“Yeah, I'm fine. I've been out walking, and I guess i'm out of shape,” she hated to lie to him, but she couldn't tell the truth.

“Don't overdo it Mac, remember what your Doctor said. 100% rest for at least two more weeks,” Harm warned.

“Yeah yeah, did you want something?” she asked annoyed.

“No, just wanted to hear your voice,” he said.

“God Harm, will you just take it easy. I'm not an invalid,” Mac snapped and hung up on him. She rose from the couch and threw the phone across the room.

Five minutes later she wondered why she had been so angry. Harm was worried about her and she had yelled at him. Something was wrong with her. She reached for her phone again and checked that it still worked before she dialled JJ's number.

“Hi JJ, it's Mac. Do you have that number?”
