Lost Chapter 8


Mac's apartment

After talking with JJ, Mac dialed the number she had gotten from him. She made an appointment for the next day and hung up. She took a deep breath and called Harm's office.

“Hello?” Harm said.

“Hey, it's me,” Mac said hesitantly.

“Hi Mac,” Harm said, surprised that she had called him back so soon.

“I'm sorry about earlier,” Mac said and sat down on the couch and started playing nervously with the couch cushion.

Harm put down his pen and leaned back in his chair. “Mac, do you think maybe that you could be having some problems related to resent events?” he asked carefully.

Mac noticed his hesitation and smiled a little. “Maybe.”

Well, that's something. Harm thought. “Maybe?

“Hey Harm, would you mind driving me somewhere tomorrow? I have an appointment. If you've got the time? I can ask Harriet...”

“Mac when is the appointment?” Harm cut off her rambling.

“0900 tomorrow morning. You probably have court, I'll call Harriet...”

“Mac, give me a chance here. I'll go with you,” Harm said.

Mac relaxed. “Thank you Harm.”

“No problem. I'll stop by tonight with dinner,” he hesitated. “I mean if you want me... Want me to...” Now he was being nervous.

Mac laughed softly. “That sounds good.”

“Good. See you tonight then.

“Bye.”

They both hung up, and as they did they both laughed by their own silliness.


Mac's apartment
Later that night

Mac opened the door eager to see what Harm brought for dinner.

“I hope pizza is okay?” Harm said as he walked past her.

“It's great,” Mac said and followed him.

Harm put the box down on the living room table and turned to her. He smiled. “Hi.”

Mac matched his smile. “Hi.”

“How was your day?” Harm asked as he removed his coat.

“It was okay. You?” Mac asked.

“It was fine. I'm preparing for court on Monday. Going up against Bud, and he's giving me a hard time,” Harm said with a smile.

“I trained him good,” Mac said proudly.

“You?” Harm questioned.

“Well, I did have a little help from you,” Mac teased.

“You must be feeling better,” Harm said and reached for her hand. “I like seeing you smile.”

“I'll try to do it more often then,” Mac said and hesitated. “About my behavior. I'm sorry.”

“Don't be sorry. I understand, I just wish you'd talk to me about it,” Harm said, and hesitated before he continued. “I don't even know what happened while you were held by the Taliban.”

“You don't?” Mac questioned. “I thought you'd read my report.”

Harm was confused. “What report?”

“The one I gave to the Admiral. I just assumed that you'd read it,” Mac said and turned away from him. “Look,” she turned back and focused on him again. “Why don't you read the report and then if you have questions you can ask. I don't want to go back to that place again.”

“You're gonna have to, Mac,” Harm said. “You can't just bury it all and think that you'll be able to go on like it never happened.”

“Don't push me,” Mac snapped. “Just back off!”

Harm knew he had gone too far and he regretted it. This was a job for a professional. He smiled. “I'm sorry, let's just have a nice night, okay?”

Mac nodded and composed herself. “Okay.”

Harm knew that he couldn't push Mac. He had to take a step back and give her the support she needed. “I was thinking,” he said and reached for her hand gain. “I have leave coming up, and maybe we should go away for a while?”

“Where would we go?” Mac asked.

“Somewhere we can relax and just be together,” he said and leaned in and kissed her.

Mac was surprised by his kiss, but soon recovered and returned the gesture. “I think that it sounds like a great idea.”

Harm smiled. “Good. My uncle has a place in Key West. How does that sound?”

“It sounds warm,” Mac said with a smile.

“Then I'll make the arrangements. But first we'll have dinner and then you can tell me about the appointment tomorrow,” Harm said and kissed her gain.

Mac smiled as he walked towards her kitchen. Was Harm finally ready to let go?
