Love Letters 98b/?

AJ stood, walked around the desk, and leaned into the face of one Biff Cresswell. If his face had been any redder, you would have considered him being painted for some athletic game. But that was definitely not the case here and Biff knew he'd hit a button that he was sure he was about to regret hitting. AJ took a breath and let loose. "ARE YOU REALLY, REALLY SURE YOU WANT TO GO THERE BIFF?" He was keeping his cool just enough not to deck the Navy JAG.

Before he could think, Biff responded. "What else I am supposed to think? I always had my suspicions, but now, I'm thinking my suspicions were correct."

To that statement, AJ grabbed Biff by the collar and stood him upright. "LET ME MAKE ONE THING VERY CLEAR MISTER. RABB AND MACKENZIE MAY HAVE TAKEN FOREVER TO GET TO WHERE THEY ARE, BUT THEY NEVER CROSSED REGS!!!"

Back at the Rabb flat...
"You see Vera, with each case we worked on, with each passing day. Our friendship grew first. The flirting that took place within that context was one of the things that confused each of us along the way," Mac said.

"So would you say it was safer for the two of you to flirt rather than face the blossoming relationship head on?" Vera inquired.

"Possibly," Harm replied.

"Probably," Mac answered.

"Why do you think that was the case?" Vera continued her line of questioning.

"We had a case come up later that involved checking out a rash of illnesses and deaths aboard a sub," Harm began.

"We had been arguing a great deal around that time and I thought that maybe we should see a counselor," Mac added.

"You Mac, suggested counselling?" Vera responded with surprise.

"Yeah, I did. We were off on our game," Mac began.

"I seemed to hit ALL her buttons, no matter what I did," Harm continued. "The Admiral even asked me before we left on the case if I knew why Mac was so grumpy. I had to admit that I was the cause of her unhappiness and he asked me if I could stop doing whatever it was that I was doing to make her mad."

Mac chuckled. "You never told me that Harm."

"Didn't think it was that important. Besides you were approaching our problem as if we were married," Harm answered.

"Well we were a couple....of sorts," Mac replied. "I didn't think it would hurt to see if we could work through whatever the problem was with a neutral third party."

"Mac, we were partners at that time, not lovers," Harm replied a bit terse.

"Ok, you two. Before you break out into war. Let's straighten this out," Vera began. "You were just working partners correct?"

In unison, "Yes."

"Not dating?"

In unison again, "No."

"Harm, what was it about counseling that you objected to?" Vera asked.

"It wasn't something we did in my family," he replied.

"So talking with me is a big step for you isn't it?" Vera said.

"Yeah, I guess you could say it is," Harm answered. "Mac wasn't any better about counselors. She didn't want to see anyone after Paraguay. She thought she could handle it on her own."

"We've travelled that road," Vera interjected. "You're right, she didn't. But she finally did and she, with my assistance, got through that period. Heck our time together has cleared up a multitude of misunderstandings between the two of you. Just think what could have happened if you had taken her suggestion then."

"It didn't feel right then. Besides, we were able to work through our problem and get back on solid footing," Harm said.

"Not without us both almost getting killed by a corpsman with Munchausen Syndrome," Mac reminded.

"Yeah, I sat there in that steam filled room with the corpsman dead, holding you as you got your breath back after I revived you," Harm said. "I never told you how many thanks to God I made that I didn't lose you on that mission."

"You did 'eh?" Mac said smiling and caressing his face with her hand.

Harm stilled her hand with his and said, "Yes." "And if you remember Mac, the Cap' on that boat commented about what great partners we were."

"And I said to him it was because you were willing to listen to me! " Mac said laughing.

"You wouldn't have said that if I could have replied!" Harm said jokingly.

"Maybe I would have and maybe I wouldn't have....but you'll never know now will you?" Mac flirtily replied.

"I can see why you two were confused," Vera said as she let out a quiet laugh.

JAG HQ

"Well if that's the case, then why did they always seem so cozy?" Biff gruffly replied.

AJ took a deep breath before he spoke. "Let's go and sit on the couches. It will keep me from flattening you to the floor."

"You know, I think you would," Biff replied.

"Damn straight!" AJ replied. "Now, let's get this whole thing straight!"

Rabb flat

"Did you two ever do things outside the office?" Vera asked.

"You mean besides work?" Mac inquired.

"Yes."

"Sometimes we had dinner together and watched movies at each others places," Mac answered.

"But we were just friends hanging out," Harm said.

"But we enjoyed that time together didn't we Harm?" Mac said softly.

"Yeah we did Mac," he replied this time he took her hand in his. "We were dating without calling it dating weren't we?"

"Yeah I think we were," Mac said. "It was definitely a date the day you took me up in 'Sarah' and got us stuck in the woods all night being chased by crazed poachers."

Vera looked at them in disbelief.

"I don't always take dates on such harrowing experiences," Harm began. "I missed a weak fan belt and we had to set down in an open field. As we tried to find help we witnessed a group of poachers murder a game warden. They then tried to take us out before we could turn them in to authorities."

"I had to kill one of them who was about to rape and then kill me," Mac added. "That after they grazed my thigh with a bullet."

"Sounds like a harrowing experience," Vera interjected.

"It was. You know though, I wasn't really ever worried," Mac said thinking back to that day. "I knew Harm would get us back safely."

Harm smiled. "Thanks Mac. I would do anything to keep you safe. You know that don't you?"

"Did then and do still Harm," Mac answered. "Just wish I would have felt better than first night we spent together in a cave."

"First?" Vera quizzed.

"We only spent one night out on that adventure," Mac replied. "Do you remember me talking about Harm and I spending the night in the desert and being shelled by our own artilery?"

"I do," Vera said.

"I think we might have moved forward by that night in the desert if the fireworks hadn't gotten in the way. Even then Harm made sure to keep me safe," Mac replied.

"Didn't want you to sleep with the scorpions," Harm said.

"I was just getting comfortable when the fireworks started," Mac replied. "If we hadn't been so worried about who was firing that night..."

"Would we have moved forward? Possibly," Harm answered.

"Aha!" Vera said.

"I know while we were waiting for Bud's surgery and the word that he had made it..."Harm began, "all I wanted to do was wrap you in my arms and never let you go."

"I felt the same way," Mac replied.

"So why didn't you?" Vera asked.

Together they answered, "It's complicated."

TBC....stay tuned for 98c!
