I also hated to write sentences in school. I mentioned this to some women co-workers when we happened to be discussing punishments we received in school.

Some time later, they threatened to make me write lines or they would file a sexual harassment complaint against me.

We worked in a large office of a conservative company. The women were required to wear pantyhose. I always was amused to hear the women complain about this. Privately, I felt I was entitled to see their legs on display for my visual enjoyment.

One of the women, Margo, was preparing to give a major presentation when she suddenly started cursing after bumping into a desk. Since she never swore before, I thought she had injured herself and went over to see what had happened.

When I asked her if she was OK, she pointed to her leg. I expected to see blood. Instead, she was pointing to a run in her pantyhose. I was relieved and started to laugh. "Is THAT all" I thought.

Margo didn't think it was funny and was obviously irritated that I had laughed at her. Instead of just dropping it, I tried to assuage her anger by making a joke. I said something about her having to "run" out to buy a new pair before her presentation.

Although I was trying to lessen her dismay, this only served to make her furious. I then said something about getting a "leg" up on the competition.

Margo and two other women who had heard my failed attempts at humor glared at me with if-looks-could kill expressions. I realized that I had made all three women seriously angry. Although Margo said nothing, one of the other women said I should be made to write lines for the waay I had spoken to Margo. The other woman said "Yeah, or else we file a sexual harassment complaint."

I could see by the expressions on the women's faces that they were not teasing and seemed to be giving the idea real consideration. I was mortified. I felt like a schoolboy faced with three angry teachers. I knew I was wrong to try to make jokes and that I had upset Margo more by doing so. But instead of apologizing, I just turned and walked away.

The women didn't go through with their threat, but for the rest of the day I kept expecting that they might actually demand that I write sentences for them.

I know I should have apologized to Margo, and thought of doing that later, but I never did.

Maybe Margo will read this and assign the sentences I probably should have been required to do at that time. Or perhaps some other reader would like to step in for her.

Writing sentences is a tedious punishment, but it does certainly give one a sense of atonement when they have been completed.
